Red Raiders Win Second Straight Game, Shut Out Hutch Tech, 23-0

By Scott Kindberg 5 min read

BUFFALO -- Tom Langworthy stood in front of his team at one end of All High Stadium, but before he said a word in his postgame chat he broke down and did a little dance and shook his hands wildly.

"That's a sign of approval," he said with a laugh.

The Jamestown High School football coach had plenty to be pleased about Saturday afternoon.

Junior Gavin Bowen rushed for 73 yards and caught four passes for 75 more; junior Drew Boggs completed 13-of-24 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown; junior Jayden Schultz booted three field goals and two extra points; and the Red Raiders' defense was at its stingiest best to highlight a 23-0 Class AA victory over Hutch Tech.

The win raised Jamestown's record to 2-0, while the Engineers fell to 0-2. Just as important, the Red Raiders will now play their next four games at home, beginning next Friday against Clarence on the new turf at Strider Field.

"I really like where we're going," Langworthy said.

It just took them a while to get started on a beautiful day on Buffalo's East Side.

In fact, after a scoreless first quarter, Hutch Tech used a 32-yard interception return of a tipped pass to give it a first down near midfield. Eventually, the Engineers moved the ball to Jamestown's 2-yard line, but a fourth-down pass fell incomplete and the Red Raiders took over.

"Our defense has played really well in both games and the (preseason) scrimmage," Langworthy said. "I love how we run to the ball. We really hustle and I think that's so important that kids play with passion."

After the change of possession, Jamestown took advantage of three Engineers' penalties, including a roughing-the-punter flag, that moved it to its own 38. A 23-yard Boggs-to-Bowen connection and runs of 14 and 15 yards by junior Tyler Eganski and junior Fran Rodriguez respectively gave the Red Raiders a first-and-goal at the 10. Their offense stalled from there, but Schultz booted a 27-yard field goal, which gave Jamestown a 3-0 led with 3:25 left in the first half.

As it turned out, the Red Raiders wouldn't take long to pad their lead.

On the second play of their ensuing possession, Hutch Tech quarterback Kris Massey's pass was tipped by Bowen and the ball landed in Eganski's arms. The interception gave Jamestown the ball at the Hutch Tech 42. Six plays later, Boggs hit Eganski with a beautiful 34-yard pass for a touchdown. Schultz booted one of his three successful PATs to give the Red Raiders a 10-0 lead with 50 seconds left in the half.

The 10 points turned out to be all Jamestown would need.

"Football is a game of momentum and when you have it on your side you have to take advantage of it," Langworthy said. "At that particular moment, it was really important."

In the second half, Schultz booted field goals of 27 and 28 yards, the first set up by Bowen's 28-yard run and 40-yard pass reception, and the latter spearheaded by Jeff Saeger's blocked punt. And when Rodriguez scooted through the defense for 14 yards and a touchdown, pushing Jamestown's lead to 23-0 with 6:49 remaining, the outcome was all but decided.

Langworthy was particularly pleased with Bowen and Schultz.

"(Bowen) gives an emotional lift to our kids," he said. "He's a great leader for being a junior and he brings a lot to the table on both sides of the ball. … Jayden Schultz worked his rear end off all offseason -- in the weight room and he even ran routes with receivers. He came to all the summer workouts, so I'm happy for him."

Meanwhile, the Engineers' never truly threatened to score in the second half as their possessions included three punts, a turnover on downs and an interception. Their last opportunity ended when time expired.

Senior Noah Turzillo led the Red Raiders' defense with six tackles, five assists, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack; freshman Savon VanSickle had six tackles, two assists and 1.5 sacks; junior Grant Moore collected six tackles and four assists, including four for loss; junior Taige White had four tackles, three assists and half a sack; and junior Seager did a little bit of everything by intercepting a pass, blocking a punt and breaking up three passes.

"It was a great game plan by (assistant coaches) Ryan Calkins and Richie Joly. They did a wonderful job," Langworthy said. "We just felt they couldn't block us up front. Then we mixed in some of our blitzes, our linebackers really came clean and we got that quarterback running. We felt if he was running, he wouldn't be as effective throwing. That proved to be true."

Jamestown returns to action next Friday when it entertains Clarence at 7 p.m.

"I think we have a lot more work to do," Langworthy said, "but today I'm just going to enjoy this. Tomorrow morning we're game-planning for Clarence."
