Jayhawks Suffer Pair Of Close Losses To Open Their Season

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Jamestown Community College opened the spring baseball season Thursday afternoon with a pair of NJCAA Division III losses to the CC of Allegheny County South at Consol Energy Park.

JCC lost its opener, 7-6, and then was dealt a 2-0 setback in the nightcap.

The Jayhawks held a 6-2 lead in the first game, but couldn’t hold it as the hosts scored the final five runs to win the game.

JCC scored in the first inning as Andrew Latona walked and eventually scored on Noah Weinstein’s sacrifice fly.

After CC of Allegheny County South (2-4) scored two runs in the second for a 2-1 advantage, the Jayhawks tallied three times in the third and two more in the fourth for a 6-2 lead.

In the third inning, the key hit was a two-run double by Weinstein that plated both the singling Cam Haberberger and Ryan Johnson, who walked.

Weinstein was at it again in the fourth with a two-run single to give him four RBIs for the contest,

However, the Tigers tied it at 6-6 with a four-run outburst in the fifth highlighted by a three-run triple by Miguel Hiraldo.

Then in the sixth, Omar Pineda Cabrera singled in the winning run as Alex Treymore Fudge, who was hit by a pitch and then swiped second, scored with two outs and handed Chad Nelson a hard-luck loss.

In the seventh, the Jayhawks had runners on first and second when the final out was recorded on a fly ball to right field.

Pineda Cabrera finished with three hits, including a double, and Noah LaGuardia-Elder added two hits for the winners. Weinstein and Haberberger each had two hits for the Jayhawks.

In the second game, Jamestown CC had its best chance to score in the top of the first inning.

The Jayhawks loaded the bases on singles by Latona and Johnson and a walk to Matt Hair with two outs. A diving catch by Rafael Ramos in the left field ended the frame for the Jayhawks.

John White didn’t give up a run until the fourth inning when LaGuardia singled, stole second and came home on Raymond Santos’ run-scoring single for a 1-0 Allegheny CC lead.

Another run crossed in the sixth as Ramos singled, swiped second and scored on Jose Luis Rodriguez’s single for a 2-0 edge.

Travis Thomas and Treymore Fudge pitched for the hosts and limited the Jayhawks to singles by Latona, Weinstein, Johnson and Noah Whalen.

”It was a beautiful day to play a doubleheader and we played really well, but the ball didn’t bounce our way,” said JCC coach Matt Cummings.

JCC will try to get back on track Sunday afternoon when its plays a twin bill at Westmoreland County (Pa.) CC, starting at noon.
