Rescinding Nomination Of Kavanaugh Would Redeem Trump And Republicans

To the Reader’s Forum:

Mr. Trump has a golden opportunity before him. With one simple action he would demonstrate that he and the Republicans do have the nation’s best interests in mind, show respect for millions of women, undo a previous wrong, begin to heal some of the deep divisions between the two political parties, restore some integrity to the Senate, and perhaps assure a Republican majority in both the House and Senate in the midterm elections. Rescind the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court and nominate Merrick Garland.

Judge Garland was a moderate choice for the Supreme Court, highly qualified and not a radical, who should have had a vote. Much of the current rancor in the Senate is the result of how badly he was treated. The court would be balanced with Neil Gorsuch assuming the mantle of Justice Scalia and Justice Garland assuming that of Justice Kennedy. Mr. Trump would still have the possibility of naming one or more justices in his remaining term or terms, their duration possibly enhanced by such a move. The Republicans could claim the moral high ground.

Let’s see if the Mr. Trump and the republicans have the wisdom and courage to do the right thing given a second, golden opportunity.
