Rebuilding Downtown Falconer A Team Effort

It’s been seven months since an arson fire leveled half a block of Falconer’s central business district.

While life goes on, village residents have a daily reminder of the fire every time they drive down Main Street. While the remains of the damaged building at 29-39 W. Main St. were demolished, the lot still contains debris. A fence and tarp have been put up to keep people out of the area, but the area is both an eyesore and a public safety threat.

The village can’t afford to remove the debris on its own, so Falconer officials reached out to the Chautauqua County Land Bank for help removing the debris. The property has two owners, and the village needs to assume control of at least half the property before the land bank can help. Land bank board members discussed the issue last week and concluded they weren’t ready to make a decision.

If ever there were a time to find a way to help the village of Falconer, it is now. In addition to being an eyesore and safety issue, the site could be packaged into an exciting part of Falconer’s future. If the village is able to do its part, the land bank should extend a hand as a partner.
