Ruth Patterson, 100, of Portland, N.Y., passed away on Monday afternoon Sept. 25, 2017, at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk, N.Y., coming there from previously residing for several years at the WCA Home in Fredonia, N.Y.
Ruth was born Aug. 5, 1917, to Clarence and Nell Burhans Henris, and had lived in this area her entire life.
She was a graduate of Westfield Central School and had been a toll collector for The New York State Thruway System. Ruth had also been the Assistant postmaster for the Portland Post Office. She had been the chairman of the Republican Committee, and belonged to the Brocton Portland Senior Citizens. Ruth was a member of the Portland Congregational Church of Portland, N.Y., for 86 years joining in 1929. She also belonged to the Wymadosis, the Fredonia Garden Club and the Brocton Portland Bridge Club. Ruth was also a member of the Eastern Star of Sherman, N.Y.
Ruth is survived by her three sons: Robert (Roberta) Patterson, Douglas (JoAnn) Patterson and Richard (Lynda) Patterson, all of Portland, N.Y.; seven grandchildren: nine great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Vivian “Vee” Patterson, whom she married June 28, 1940, and who passed away Feb. 26, 2000, after 59 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by two brothers: Charles and Fred.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning, Sept. 30, 2017, at noon at The Portland Congregational Church, Portland, N.Y. The Rev. Gordon Spiller will officiate.
The family will welcome family and friends at the Church from 11 a.m. to noon, one hour prior to the start of the funeral service. Interment will follow at the Portland Evergreen Cemetery.
