While residents await the Children's Museum of Jamestown to officially open its doors in 2019, the Tot Spot also located at 14 E. Second St. will host classes for children and adults during the month of October.
Up to five weeks of one-day sessions will be provided for all ages. Classes will be taught on the subjects of crafts, self-defense, calligraphy, sewing and more.
A Mommy and Me: Wiggles and Giggles course will be presented by Allison Slagle, who has a Master of Arts in physical education. The small exercise activities will be for children ages six months to three years old. The classes will be hosted on Tuesdays from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. For a child and adult to attend the classes, the cost is $40, and space is limited.
Starting Thursday, there will be Craft and Science Project Nights on Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. for children ages four and up. There is a $48 fee per child to attend the four classes.
Self-Defense Workshops will be facilitated for children ages 13 and up on Mondays from 6-7 p.m., with no class on Columbus Day. Admission is $20 per student, and instruction will be catered by Christina Kebort, an eighth-degree black belt in shotokan karate.
Paula Slagle, a pre-school and religious education teacher, will run a Pinecone Bird Feeder Project on Saturday from 10-11 a.m. Children ages four and up can participate for $10, and all building materials will be provided.
Instructor Patti Greenstein will teach two classes throughout the month: Fun-damentals of Lettering and Quoted Canvas Workshop. The lettering course will help children ages 12 and up learn calligraphy and cursive writing. This $15 course will be taught Saturday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon, and all materials will be provided. The canvas workshop will be taught for $25 per child ages 12 and up, so they can create a decorative quote with guided penmanship. This activity will be hosted Saturday, Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
A Learn to Use Sewing Machine by Creating Projects course will be provided for two work sessions, one taught during Wednesday and Oct. 10 and another taught during Oct. 17 and 24. Machines and all materials will be provided for students ages eight and up. Janice Shoup of Quilters' Haven will teach the classes.
Lastly, a Sensory Hour will be hosted Friday mornings by Dolores Parsons and Kelli Rodriguez. For $2 per child, sensory building will be offered for a child and parent.

In related news, attendance at the Tot Spot has slowly increased since its opening about two months ago. Andrews said she has hosted up to 10 children at once. Birthday parties have also been hosted, and the Tot Spot remains open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.
"People have been kind and generous in donating items," said Andrews, who noted the building continues to better accommodate visiting children and their parents. "When the weather turns, people will look for fun indoors."
After a process to become a registered non-profit is completed, the Children's Museum of Jamestown will open some time in 2019.
