ELLERY -- A Randolph man was charged following a rollover crash late Saturday in the town of Ellery.
Heath E. Zawatski, 30, of Parker Hill Road, was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, failure to comply, moving from lane unsafely and failure to keep right. Firefighters were summoned to Pancake Hill Road for a motor vehicle crash around 9:45 p.m. with a male partially ejected and pinned.
Shortly before the crash, the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office received numerous complaints of an erratic driver on Dutch Hollow Road. Deputies were able to locate the vehicle, found to be driven by Zawatski, and attempted to make a traffic stop.
Zawatski failed to comply and continued driving north on Pancake Hill Road, where he failed to negotiate a turn and entered the ditch. The Chevrolet pickup truck rolled onto its side, pinning the Randolph man for about 45 minutes.
Firefighters from Fluvanna and Bemus Point responded to the crash, as did sheriff's deputies, state police and ALSTAR EMS.
After Zawatski was extricated, he was taken by ambulance to Ellery Town Park where he was flown by helicopter to UPMC Hamot hospital in Erie, Pa. His injuries were considered non-life-threatening.
Zawatski is scheduled to appear in Ellery Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.
