MAYVILLE — Jury selection is underway in the case involving a Cheektowaga man facing multiple felony charges for allegedly attacking a female Chautauqua County Sheriff’s deputy.

Three jurors were seated Tuesday at the Chautauqua County Courthouse in Mayville. More than 30 potential jurors were examined for selection.

Twelve jurors and four alternate jurors will be chosen for the case involving 22-year-old Justin Haffa, who faces charges of first-degree attempted murder; first-degree robbery; and attempted aggravated assault on a police officer, all felonies.

Charges stem from an incident that occurred in the early morning of Sept. 11 when Haffa crashed his vehicle into a ditch on Route 60 in the town of Pomfret. The deputy responded to the scene and began performing a field sobriety test when Haffa allegedly pinned her to the ground, injured her with a knife and wrestled her gun away before fleeing the scene. Haffa was located and apprehended a short time later.

Multiple drugs, including Xanax, marijuana and a bottle of DXM — a cough medicine that can become hallucinogenic in high doses — were reportedly what caused Haffa to crash.

Haffa was arraigned on a three-count indictment on Sept. 19 and later plead not guilty to the charges. Haffa is being held in the Chautauqua County Jail without bail.

Chautauqua Count District Attorney Patrick Swanson said he’s hopeful a full jury is selected by the end of the week.

Interviews of potential jurors resumes today in Mayville.
