LAKEWOOD — Half a century ago, the Southwestern High School golf team returned from Elma Meadows Golf Course with the ultimate prize.

On June 9, 1975, the Trojans, coached by Gene Munson, captured the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship by 14 strokes, the first-ever state crown by an area school in any sport.

The players on that squad were seniors Rick Bell, Gary Freeman, Randy Holmes and Mark Widner, and junior Dan Bjork. Bell was the tournament medalist with a 69-73-142, while Holmes fired a 77-76-153, Widener a 78-78-156, Bjork a 79-82-161 and Freeman a 81-81-162.

Most of that crew — along with plenty of supporters — held a 50th reunion on Friday, featuring a lunch, followed by a round of golf at their “home” course, Maplehurst Country Club.

Highlighting the afternoon was Freeman, who used a 3-wood to ace the 210-yard, par 3 seventh hole.

In addition, Bell presented a check for $300 from “Friends of Southwestern Golf” to Scott Johnson, a Jamestown representative of First Tee, which is a youth development organization that, according to its website, “enables kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges” by learning to play the game.
