Skunks Crumble In 6th To Lose To Niagara Falls
NIAGARA FALLS — A 6-5 lead got away from the Jamestown Tarp Skunks en route to a 16-6 eight-inning loss to the Niagara Falls Americans in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League action Tuesday at Sal Maglie Stadium.
Jamestown regained a one-run lead in the top of the sixth inning before left-hander Nick Syposs (Fredonia State University) — in his first appearance of the season — allowed nine runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one in the bottom half of the frame.
The fourth-place Tarp Skunks (15-18) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Nigel Sebastianelli (Niagara County Community College) led off with a walk and scored on Henry Juan’s (Williams College) one-out RBI double. Bobby Stang (University of Dayton) followed with an RBI double of his own.
Last-place Niagara Falls (11-21) made it 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, before Jamestown made it 4-1 in the top of the fifth. Aidan Wallace (University of Tampa) was hit by a pitch and Connor Kiefer (Alfred State College) walked. After a fielder’s choice left runners at first and third, Wallace and Sebastianelli scored on wild pitches.
The Americans took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth before the Tarp Skunks regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Stang doubled and Kobe Jones (Shorter University) singled before Shaniel Maldonado (Mercer Community College) hit a sacrifice fly. Leo Doyle (Wagner College) then hit an RBI double to make it 6-5.
But Niagara Falls scored the final 11 runs of the game, including its nine-run sixth, to win via the 10-run rule in the bottom of the eighth.
Will Saxenmeyer (Wagner College) started for Jamestown, pitching three two-hit innings of shutout ball with five strikeouts while walking two. Gabe Wheeler (University of Tampa) allowed five runs (three earned) in two innings while walking four. Kiefer got the final outs after the inning from Syposs. Kiefer allowed two runs on four hits and a walk.
The Tarp Skunks will host first-place Batavia (26-6) at 6:30 tonight at Diethrick Park.
