Lakewood YMCA Holds Tournament With Four Divisions Of Competition

Brayden Haaksma and Mirthinus Marais, who competed for the High School Coed Singles Division title.

Dan Darrell-Sterbak, Nella Darrell-Sterbak, Erika Pickard and Grace Kutschke, who competed for the Coed Doubles Division third consolation title.

LAKEWOOD — The annual AVI Tennis Tournament was held recently at the Lakewood YMCA.

Action began with the 10-11-year-old Rising Stars Junior Singles Division on Thursday. The top seeds after round-robin play were Jeffrey Lin, Grayson Jewell, Jared Kang and Henrik Alm. In the semifinals, Lin defeated Alm 3-0 and Jewell beat Kang 3-1. Lin claimed the championship with a 4-3 win over Jewell.

Thursday’s action concluded with the 12-15-year-old Rising Stars Junior Singles Division. The top seeds after round-robin play were Jack Sherry, Tobiah Reinard, James Lin and Mason Close. In the semifinals, Sherry defeated Close 3-0 and Reinard beat Lin 3-1. Sherry claimed the championship with a 4-1 victory over Reinard.

The High School Coed Singles Division used a compass draw format. In the East Division, Mirthinus Marais beat Myla Brainard 4-0, 4-0; Riley Farrugello defeated Tyler Griffin 1-4, 4-3, 10-3; Cavan Boutillette topped Mary Gerace 3-4, 4-1, 10-3; and Brayden Haaksma swept Dylan Ansell 4-0, 4-0. In the second round, Marais defeated Farrugello 4-1, 4-0; and Haaksma downed Boutillette 4-3, 4-1. Haaksma won the title 4-1, 1-4, 10-8 over Marais. In the first consolation match, Boutillette defeated Farrugello 4-3, 4-0. In the second consolation, Gerace defeated Brainard 4-3, 4-3. Brainard got to the consolation final with a 3-4, 4-3, 11-9 win over Griffin, while Gerace topped Ansell 4-2, 4-0. In the third consolation, Griffin beat Ansell 4-2, 4-2.

The Coed Doubles Division also used a compass draw format. In the East Division, Marais and Griffin beat Erika Pickard and Grace Kutschke 4-0, 4-1; Lauren Richmond and Angela Chardeen beat Raymond Barrett and Courtney Leonard 4-0, 4-2; Christian Oakes and Boutilette defeated Farrugello and Myla Brainard 4-0 4-1; and Jacob Gerace and Mary Gerace defeated Dan Darrell-Sterbak and Nella Darrell-Sterbak 4-3, 4-1. In the second round, Marais and Griffin defeated Oakes and Boutillette 4-0, 4-1, while Richmond and Chardeen defeated Gerace and Gerace 4-1, 4-2. Marais and Griffin beat Richmond and Chardeen 4-2, 4-3 in the final. In the first consolation, Gerace and Gerace beat Oakes and Boutillette 1-4, 4-3, 10-3. In the second consolation, Leonard and Barrett topped Farrugello and Brainard 4-3, 4-0. Farrugello and Brainard got to the final with a 4-3, 4-3 defeat of Pickard and Kutschke, while Leonard and Barrett beat the Darrell-Sterbaks 2-4, 4-3, 11-9. In the third consolation, the Darrell-Sterbaks topped Pickard and Kutschke in straight sets.
