In a battle of two very evenly matched teams, the Jamestown Community College volleyball team got the best of Erie Community College in four sets in the home-opener Thursday evening at the Physical Education Complex.

The teams took each other to the limits but the Jayhawks (6-6, 6-1 Region 3) prevailed as they came away with set scores of 25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 25-20.

Freshman middle hitter Rian Finch (Randolph/Randolph HS) had a career-night on the court, leading the team with 10 kills while sophomore right side Claire Pumford (Jamestown/Jamestown HS) and freshman outside hitter Mikala Einink (Clymer/Clymer Central) picked up seven kills apiece. Sophomore setter Madison Johnson (Panama/Panama Central) stayed consistent in orchestrating the offense, picking up 32 assists on the night.

On the defensive side it was a true team effort as five Jayhawks finished with double-digit digs. Libero Sydney Ulasewicz (Allegany/Allegany-Limestone Central) led the way with 23 digs with Johnson and Pumford adding 15 and 14 digs, respectively. Einink and sophomore defensive specialist Breanna Gilbert-Hopkins (Falconer/Chautauqua Lake Central) each chipped in with 10 digs apiece. At the net, sophomore outside hitter Emma McCarthy (Olean/Allegany-Limestone Central) and Finch came away with two blocks.

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Saturday as they host the Jamestown Community College POD where they will play Genesee Community College, Finger Lakes Community College and Monroe Community College. Action will begin at 10 a.m.
