CLYMER — As the final Section VI team to make its postseason debut, Clymer/Sherman/Panama showed no signs of rust Thursday afternoon.

Freshman Tate Catanese and senior Kurtis Olson hit home runs as the top-seeded Wolfpack shut out No. 4 Ellicottville 10-0 in five innings.

C/S/P will now take on No. 2 Franklinville, which beat No. 3 Pine Valley 5-3 in Thursday’s other semifinal. The title game will be at noon Saturday at Diethrick Park.

Playing its first game in a week, C/S/P jumped on Eagles starter Caedon Wyatt in the bottom of the first. Austin White led off with a single up the middle and stole second before a groundout moved him to third. Consecutive walks then loaded the bases before Trent Burchanowski drew a walk to force in the first run of the game.

“We talked about pitch selection. Be ready for your pitch and don’t expand the zone early in the count,” C/S/P head coach Jake Marino said. “When you get your pitch, be ready to jump on it.”

Olson followed with a sacrifice fly to center field before Catanese drilled a pitch over the left-field fence for a three-run home run and a 5-0 lead.

“He’s a good hitter. I knew he had the power to definitely get one over the fence,” Marino said of Catanese. He usually lives gap to gap. To see him turn on one like that, get his hands in and really pull the ball hard, that was a good hit.”

That would prove to be plenty for junior Gabe Roth, who threw four innings of one-hit ball, striking out 10. The lone hit he allowed was Lucas Marsh’s two-out single in the top of the first inning.

“He’s a really good pitcher and commands the zone,” Olson said.

“We’ve faced good pitching all year,” Ellicottville head coach Chris Mendell said. “He’s right up there with some of the guys we’ve faced for sure, no question.”

The Wolfpack ended up scoring in all four innings during which they batted.

White doubled and scored on an error in the second inning. Olson singled, stole second, went to third on Dylan Michael’s sacrifice bunt and scored on White’s sacrifice fly to center field in the third inning.

“We can always count on anybody to get a hit,” Olson said, “at any time in this lineup.”

C/S/P put the game away with a three-run fourth inning. Roth walked and stole second to open the inning before Burchanowski hit an RBI double to the fence in center field.

“I thought Caedon settled down after the first inning, but the first inning set the tone for them,” Mendell said. “I was proud of the way he came back. He worked hard and competed the rest of the game for us.”

Olson made the margin 10 when he deposited a pitch over the fence in left field for a two-run home run.

“He hits the ball so hard some times,” Marino said. “When he hits the ball hard, you know it. It just goes, and sounds good off the bat.”

Burchanowski closed out the game with a scoreless fifth inning, inducing a comebacker before two strikeouts of his own.

“Gabe is ready to go Saturday. Trent didn’t have many pitches,” Olson said. “All of our pitchers are healthy.”

The efficiency by which Roth and Burchanowski pitched means that the Wolfpack will have all of their pitchers available Saturday when they take on Franklinville for the sectional title.

“It puts us in a really good spot going into Saturday,” Marino said. “Everybody is ready to go and ready to pitch.”

NOTES: White was 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored; Roth walked twice and scored two runs; Burchanowski walked, doubled, drove in two runs and scored two runs; and Olson singled, homered, drove in two runs and scored two runs. … Wyatt struck out two and walked five for the Eagles.
