Chautauqua Lake’s Olivia Herrington went toe to toe with the 2021 OBSERVER/Post-Journal Player of the Year Haleigh Dellow of Westfield (10-1, 6-1) and Herrington came out on top 1-0.

Herrington gave up just three hits, struck out nine, walked one and secured the complete game shutout to keep the Thunderbirds record unblemished.

Dellow was just as good in the circle, giving up six hits, striking out 11 and pitching the complete game.

Dellow’s kryptonite was Chautauqua Lake’s Jenna Waters who was able to smack two big extra-base hits. Waters first tripled in the third, but was left stranded. Waters later doubled to lead off the sixth inning. A sacrifice bunt moved her along and a wild pitch allowed for the speedy Waters to score.

Westfield almost struck first in the bottom of the fifth inning. Madyson Burgess found her way to third base after a leadoff hit and aggressive baserunning. The aggressive baserunning came back to bite the Wolverines, however, when Burgess was sent home after a sacrifice bunt attempt by Mackenzie Schumaker that led to a 1-3-2 double play that ended the inning.

With the win, Chautauqua Lake (7-0, 7-0) moves into sole possession of first place of Division 2 West.

STEWARDS SHINE

RANDOLPH — Kendall Steward scattered four hits, struck out 11 and issued one walk to spark Randolph to a 7-2 Division 1 East victory over Pine Valley.

Steward helped her own cause with a double and a triple; Sadie Steward collected three hits and Kyra Pence chipped in a pair.

The win raised the Cardinals’ record to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in the division.

Ashley Campbell smacked a triple for the Panthers.

TROJANS SCORE EARLY

Southwestern (2-5, 2-4) scored three runs in the first as it beat Jamestown 3-1 in Division 1 West action.

The Trojans got started with a Teagan Shedd single, Shedd was then knocked in by Alli Durnell with a single. Durnell was joined on the bases by Brynne Conley who walked and Jaidyn Newhouse knocked them both home to take the early 3-0 lead.

Conley protected the lead from the circle, giving up two hits, two walks and striking out one through five innings. Durnell came in for relief and struck out four while not giving up a hit in the save.

Aliya Graham scored the only run for Jamestown (2-6, 2-5), after stealing second and making it third on an interference call she was hit in by Kylie O’Brien with a sacrifice fly.

Lindsey Spitz pitched all seven innings for the Red Raiders, giving up eight hits, walking three and striking out three.
