Rebels Split Pair Of Weekend Road Games

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Carter Casper scored in the fourth round of a shootout to send the Jamestown Rebels to their fourth straight victory, 2-1 over the Johnstown Tomahawks on Friday night at 1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial.

The win pulled the Rebels into a third-place tie in the East Division with the Tomahawks and Northeast Generals. All three teams have 35 points.

“They didn’t want to win this hockey game,” Jamestown head coach Joe Coombs said postgame. “We didn’t want to win this hockey game.”

Nolan Grier, Marcus Kivela Carlzon and Reid Lune were all stopped on their chances by Johnstown goaltender Salvatore Evola.

Likewise, Jamestown goaltender Nolan Suggs stopped the Tomahawks’ Stephen Kyrkostas, Jacob Badal and Frank Jenkins on their opportunities.

After Casper netted the Rebels’ go-ahead goal, Suggs stopped Jake Black for the victory.

“If he could’ve scored the goals tonight, he would’ve,” Coombs said of Suggs. “He was outstanding. Absolutely outstanding.”

Jamestown captain John Lundy got the Rebels on the scoreboard 7:18 into the first period when he scored his team-leading 15th goal of the season from Reid Lune and Kolby Amici.

The game remained 1-0 until just past the midway point of the third period when Black scored his 22nd of the season from Badal and Sean Ramsay.

“The first 10 minutes we were really, really good,” Coombs said. “Then we went right back to turning pucks over and more of the same.”

Jamestown had a power play in the overtime session, but was unable to capitalize with Ethan Perrault in the penalty box for holding.

Suggs turned aside 23 shots for his ninth win of the season while Evola stopped 36 shots in defeat.

“They need to practice well. When they don’t, it gives you something to think about because you are guessing. I’m guessing all the time when you’re dealing with 18-year-old kids. Some nights you’re right and sometimes you’re wrong. Last weekend I guessed right twice,” Coombs said of his decision to go with goaltender Jon Howe on back-to-back days. “Friday in practice they were both really good. We went with Suggs tonight and it was the right decision. He wants the opportunity to go back to back and I’m going to give it to him.”
