Rebels Salvage Win In Shootout

Nolan Grier and Jak Vaarwerk scored goals in the shootout to send Jamestown to a 4-3 victory over Maryland in a North American Hockey League game at Northwest Arena on Friday night.

The Rebels (18-4-2-1), who led 3-1 after two periods, saw the Black Bears (20-7-3-3) score twice in the third frame and had to survive a scoreless overtime before finally prevailing in the shootout.

Jamestown opened the scoring in the first period when John Lundy scored twice, courtesy of assists from Lucas (Peter) Klemm, Reid Lune, Luke Devries and Noahn Szretter. The latter goal was on the power play.

Maryland cut the deficit to 2-1 with a goal midway through the second stanza as Laker Aldridge found the back of the net on a feed from Matthew Davies. The Rebels pushed the lead back to two goals when Vaarwerk scored on the power play, assisted by Owen West and Conor Sedlak.

The Black Bears tied the game in the third period on goals by Brad McNeil and Elliott Lareau, the latter tally coming at the 19:49 mark. Assisting on the goals were Ryan Bottrill, Jack Blanchard and Sean Kilcullen.

Jon Howe was in goal for Jamestown and stopped 33 shots. Luca DiPasquo took the loss in net for Maryland.

Lundy, Howe and Vaarwerk were the first through third stars.

The Rebels entertain the Black Bears again tonight. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m.
