The former Jamestown High School basketball star has reached a deal with the NBA’s Detroit Pistons on a 10-day contract, hoopsrumors.com reported Friday morning.

According to the website’s Luke Adams, the Pistons have experienced plenty of roster turnover this month, with eight players currently in the health and safety protocols. In fact, they have already signed seven other players to 10-day hardship deals, so Paige is on track to be the eighth.

Paige’s signing comes on the heels of a 39-point, five-rebound, four-steal performance for the NBA G League’s Maine Celtics in a Showcase Cup quarterfinal in Las Vegas earlier this month. So far this season, he is averaging 16.9 points and shooting 45% from the field, including 37% from the arc, and 87% from the foul line in 14 games.

The 6-foot-2 point guard’s pending arrival with the Pistons caps a hoops odyssey that began as a Red Raider when he averaged 26 points a game and led the program to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Final Four in Glens Falls in 2011.

After moving to Hazard, Kentucky and playing for Perry County High School his senior year, Paige landed at the College of Southern Idaho for a year, averaging 13.6 points; transferred to Moberly (Missouri) Area Community College as a sophomore where he averaged 21 points; and then moved on to West Virginia University.

Under Coach Bob Huggins, Paige went from averaging 5.6 points per game as a junior to 14.3 points per game as a senior when he was the recipient of the Big 12 Conference Sixth Man of the Year. Highlights of that season included Paige scoring a career-high 34 points against Iowa State and having 26 points, five steals and four rebounds when the Mountaineers upset top-ranked Kansas.

Prior to this season, Paige has played for teams in Germany, North Macedonia, England, Hungary and Puerto Rico. He had a previous stint with Maine during the 2019-2020 season.

“I’m so proud of him and just really happy that he finally attained his goal of playing in the NBA,” Jamestown High School coach Ben Drake said. “He has beaten the odds every step of the way. We saw first-hand how good he was in high school. I thought he was really under-recruited.

“Obviously, he had great experiences and opportunities playing in several different countries (after college) … and he always believed in himself. … I know he’ll do all he can to make the most of it.”

Paige is believed to be the second player from Chautauqua County to reach the NBA. Ironically, Silver Creek native George Carter was selected by the Pistons in the eighth round of the 1967 NBA draft. He played only one game for the Pistons and ultimately joined the Washington Caps of the American Basketball Association. Carter went on to play seven seasons in the ABA.
