Added To The Rafters

St. Bonaventure Director of Athletics Joe Manhertz presents Carter’s All-Time Team plaque to George’s brother, Chuck.

The late George Carter has joined a list of St. Bonaventure basketball immortals to have his number retired in the Reilly Center rafters. St. Bonaventure has honored the memory of Carter, a 1967 graduate, by adding his name to a trio of greats to have the No. 25 retired. Carter joins Essie Hollis, ’77 and Earl Belcher, ’81 as legendary Bonnies who wore that number as well. An in-game ceremony honoring Carter took place during the Bonnies’ game last Saturday against Buffalo to formally celebrate the new banner. Carter, a native of Silver Creek, ranks 24th in Bonnies career scoring (1,322 points, 19.4 ppg) and fifth in rebounds (849). His 12.5 rebounds per game average is second only to Bob Lanier in school history. A member of St. Bonaventure’s All-Time Team selected in 2019 and a Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Carter starred in the American Basketball Association. He passed away last November and was laid to rest this summer at St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
