Jayhawks Volleyball Defeats Corning 3-1

CORNING — Looking to get back in the win column, the Jamestown Community College volleyball battled a tough Corning Community College team and came away with a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon.

The Jayhawks (3-5) needed to extend the first set to come away with a 27-25 victory. Jamestown CC came back strong in the second set, getting the 25-18 win. The Red Barons did go away quietly, winning the third set 25-21. The Jayhawks were able to close out the match, getting the 25-16 victory in the fourth set.

Freshman outside hitter Emma McCarthy (Olean/Allegany-Limestone) led the offensive attack, having a team-high 11 kills with freshman middle hitter Claire Pumford (Jamestown/Jamestown) and freshman outside hitter Megan Cotter (Jamestown/Southwestern) finishing with nine kills apiece.

On the defensive side, Cotter and Claire Pumford had a team-high 17 digs each with freshman setter Madison Johnson (Panama/Panama) chipping in with 13 digs.

Johnson facilitated the offense nicely, collecting 30 assists while Claire Pumford and sophomore right side Emma Pumford (Jamestown/Jamestown) combined for six blocks.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

FALCONER — Looking to get the offense going, that’s exactly what happened when the Jamestown Community College women’s soccer team defeated visiting Corning Community College 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Jayhawks (2-5) got on the board in the 15th minute of action as freshman midfielder Kylie Keefe (Mayville/Chautauqua Lake) found the back of the net to go up 1-0. Freshman midfielder/forward Alexa Swanson (Jamestown/Jamestown) extended Jamestown CC’s lead, scoring in the 23rd minute of play.

Going into the second half, the Jayhawks iced the game as Swanson found freshman midfielder Emma Fox (Port Allegany, Pennsylvania/Port Allegany) to put the Jayhawks up 3-0 in the 64th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Kymi Nance (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) earned the win in net, making five saves on the day.

Tied at halftime in Sunday’s game, Niagara County CC scored three goals after the break to knock off the Jayhawks 3-0.

MEN’S SOCCER

FALCONER — Niagara County CC scored the lone goal in the first half and held on to down Jamestown CC 1-0 in an NJCAA Region 3 Division III game.

Bryan Anderson made seven saves for the Jayhawks (1-4), who travel to Monroe CC on Wednesday.

CROSS COUNTRY

CANANDAIGUA — The Jamestown Community College cross country team had its best performance of the season as both runners finished in the top-10 at the Finger Lakes Community College Bruce Bridgeman Invitational.

Emma Redlecki (Clymer/Clymer) had a strong showing, placing seventh in the 5k event out of 20 runners. Redlecki finished with a time of 27:10.7.

Joey Pillittieri (Falconer/Falconer) also had a strong showing in the men’s race, placing ninth in the 8k event out of 42 runners. Pillittieri finished with a time of 31:03.3, two-tenths of a second behind the eighth-place finisher.

The Jayhawks will be back in action next Saturday as they travel to Roberts Wesleyan College for the Harry F. Anderson Invitational.
