Jamestown CC Men Erupt For Eight Goals In Ohio

ELYRIA, Ohio — It was a coming-out party for the Jamestown Community College men’s soccer team, routing Lorain County CC 8-2 on Monday afternoon.

“It never hurts to see the ball go into the net,” Jamestown CC head coach Pat Anderson said. “We had some guys who hadn’t scored and they got a chance to put some in.”

The Jayhawks started out quickly with freshman midfielder Louis Hurst (Blackpool, England/Cardinal Newman College) finding the back of the net off the feed from freshman midfielder Mario Alberto Campo (Bogota, Columbia/Gimnasio de los Cerros) just five minutes into the contest.

Hurst scored the second of his three goals in the 18th minute of action with freshman defender Owain Jones (Cardiff, Wales/Coleg Y Cymoedd) getting the assist. Jamestown CC pushed its lead to three in the 28th minute with sophomore forward Jesse da Costa (Perth, Western Australia/SEDA) setting up freshman forward Josh Heim (Westfield/Westfield) for his first of three goals on the afternoon.

“Jesse was playing on the wing and managed to set up a couple of goals. He had a couple of good chances of his own that he wasn’t quite lucky enough on,” Anderson said of da Costa. “He did a great job of putting people in good positions.”

To close out the first half of action, Heim answered the call again with a goal in the 36th minute with freshman midfielder Connor Lewis (Surrey, England/Farnborough Academy) coming away with the assist.

“He was really aggressive playing out on the wing,” Anderson said of Heim. “He finished a couple in close to the net, including one on a rebound off of the post. His aggressiveness really helped him today.”

The Jayhawks kept the pressure on the Commodores as Hurst added another goal to his total in the 54th minute off the setup from da Costa and freshman midfielder Tshepiso Ntuli (Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa/Pretoria Boys HS).

“He had a couple of really nice shots from about 12 yards out where he had some room. He’s been kind of antsy to get his first goal,” Anderson said of Hurst. “He’s been a little frustrated. I’m sure this will be a good boost for him.”

After a 20-minute stalemate, sophomore forward Ryan Koch (Auckland, New Zealand/Long Bay College) got the energy flowing again with a goal in the 73rd minute off the feed from freshman midfielder Javier Garcia (Pamplona,Navarra, Spain/San Cernin).

In the 77th minute, Koch facilitated the offense this time, setting up Heim for his third goal of the contest. Lorain County CC did halt the seven-goal run, scoring a pair to cut the deficit to 7-2.

Freshman midfielder Jesse Plaatjes (Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa/Northwood) put the cherry on top for the Jayhawks, scoring in the 86th minute as freshmen forwards Caleb Foley (Jamestown/Maple Grove) and Kayque Rodrigues (Sao Paulo, Brazil/E.E. Miguel Munhoz Filho) assisted.

Freshman goalkeeper Bryan Anderson (Ashville/Chautauqua Lake) earned the win in net in 62 minutes of action. Freshman goalkeeper Ben Livingston went the rest of the way in relief.

“We didn’t do a great job of putting Ben in a great spot,” Anderson said of Livingston. “He got his first action and I’m sure was happy to get on the field and play a little bit.”

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Saturday as they travel to Fulton-Montgomery Community College for a 4 p.m. start.

“Offensively, we did a few pretty good things and attacked the net. Hopefully that kind of aggressive attack will translate over to this weekend at Fulton-Montgomery,” Anderson said. “I suspect that game should be really close. If we play at our best, it should be a really tight one.”

On Sunday, they will visit SUNY Adirondack.

“Adirondack has shown signs lately of putting things together. They keep improving game by game,” Anderson said. “It’s hard to tell until you get out on the field. It might have been an easier game earlier in the year than it is now.”
