Striders Development Program Wraps Up

On July 14, Chautauqua Striders completed its 2021 Youth Track Development Program at Strider Field. Eighty-three youth (ages 5-14) from across Chautauqua County participated in a series of track events, hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, discus and javelin. Co-head coach Sean Swan-Leuze was impressed by the commitment and development from those who participated. “I definitely noticed the difference in all the athletes from day one,” he said. “All participants learned about track and field, and the importance of exercise. Our coaches motivated them, encouraged them and provided positive feedback whenever possible.” Seventeen paid and volunteer coaches were on hand to support the program, which ran on Monday and Wednesday evenings over five weeks. Along with the development of the skills of those participating, Swan-Leuze noted the positive attitude and sportsmanship shown, noting that “the highlight of the program for me was seeing one of our youth runners take it upon himself to encourage his peer, who was much slower than him, to try hard to win the race. That is a very special quality to see in an 8-year-old.” At the close of the program, youth were presented with certificates and prizes to acknowledge their hard work and effort. At that final session, co-head coach Karen Johnson remarked, “I am proud of all the hard working coaches, as well as the families that helped support these athletes. I cannot wait for next season!” For more information on youth track programming, and all Chautauqua Striders programming call 716-488-2203.
