SHERMAN — Gabe Roth is just a sophomore and had only one official at-bat in Monday’s Section VI Class C quarterfinal.

But the Clymer/Sherman/Panama right-hander made as big of an impact as any player on the field.

Roth threw a complete-game four-hitter with eight strikeouts and scored a pair of runs as the top-seeded Wolfpack beat No. 8 Frewsburg, 7-2.

“He’s been a leader the whole year on the mound. When they were still playing basketball he came into the gym and he was there asking how to get better,” C/S/P head coach Jake Marino said. “He’s always worked hard. … He’s earned his spot on the mound.”

Next up for C/S/P is a Wednesday date with No. 4 Gowanda in Panama. The Panthers beat No. 5 Randolph 15-8 in another Monday quarterfinal.

For Frewsburg, Monday’s loss marked the end of an era as head coach Jay Grann confirmed following the game that he planned to step down after 14 years, six Section VI championships and 203 wins as the Bears head coach.

“I’m having some doubts already. I think it’s time to go for now. I’m still young and I’m sure some opportunities will pop up,” said Grann, who has three school-aged daughters. “I’ve got to go spend some time with the girls and make them better ballplayers, too.”

Frewsburg led 1-0 after the top of the first inning, scoring without the benefit of a hit, before the Wolfpack broke through in the third inning.

Austin White walked to open the frame and stole second. After a strikeout, Roth was intentionally walked and then completed a successful double steal with White to put runners at second and third. Pitcher Traden Gray then induced a foul popout, but walked Matthew White to load the bases.

“I like to play aggressive. If we can get into scoring position, that’s one base closer to hit them in. … I think that way with any of our batters up there,” Marino said of stealing second even though an intentional walk may follow. “They all have the potential to hit the ball into the gap and hit the ball hard. We’re always looking to get that extra base.”

No. 6 hitter Micah Willink then came through with a line-drive double to left-center field to clear the bases and give C/S/P a 3-1 lead.

“He changed his entire mindset of ‘I don’t have to hit a home run. I have to hit the ball hard to the gaps and good things are going to happen,'” Marino said of Willink. “He hit a ball hard to left-center field that he probably wouldn’t have hit in the first game of the season because he has changed his approach. He’s short, he’s quick to the ball and he has a really good swing.”

“We’ve worked really hard,” Roth added, “and Micah has worked really hard to get to the point where he can drive in runs.”

The Bears got a run back in the top of the fourth inning as Trent Bjork was hit by a pitch and scored on Garrett Brink’s RBI single to right field.

The Wolfpack made it 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kurtis Olsen walked, went to second on Blake Kopta’s single to left field and scored on a two-out error.

C/S/P put the game away with a three-run sixth inning. Derek Sears reached on an error and Roth walked for the third time before an infield fly for the first out. Sears then stole third and Frewsburg gave Roth second before White reached on an error allowing both runners to score. White scored when Willink reached on another error and the Wolfpack led 7-2.

“You have to be so precise at this field. It’s a mess out there. Once you field it, you have to get rid of it quick,” Grann said. “I think our guys were trying to be perfect, rushed a few things and they took advantage.”

The Bears finished with eight walks — two of which were intentional to Roth — and five errors.

“I think our pitchers threw the ball well. Traden has always been a guy that has worked a lot of counts. He went a little too deep on a few,” Grann said. “They have good hitters, I think he was trying to be precise and he missed a few spots.”

Roth — who struck out the side in the sixth and didn’t walk a batter after the fourth — worked around a two-out single in the seventh and put the game away by getting a groundball to third that Olsen turned into an out at second base to end it.

“I thought we really competed with a bigger school. We were able to hang right there with them,” Grann said. “I thought we had good at-bats. They have some really good players.”

C/S/P, in its first season with all three programs merged into one, will now look to keep its perfect 11-0 season alive Wednesday when it takes the show down Route 76 to Panama.

“We’re confident in our guys. We’ll see whether it’s Austin, Derek or Kurt,” Marino said when asked about Wednesday’s starting pitcher. “We have some options … we’ll see who’s ready to go.”

A possible sectional final would be in Clymer on Saturday. One playoff win in each community is certainly the goal.

“We have great chemistry and we’re playing for each other right now,” Roth said. “I think that’s the key to go really far in this tournament.”

NOTES: Brink had two of Frewsburg’s four hits while Gray and Schrecengost combined for seven strikeouts on the mound.
