Kiley Anastasia kept Southwestern’s hitters off-balanced just long enough for Olean’s offense to catch up Friday afternoon.

The Huskies junior right-hander allowed just four hits and one run in five innings of work while striking out five as Olean beat the Trojans 11-2 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West action at Southwestern Central School.

“First game of the year and she had a lot of junk on the pitches,” Southwestern coach Jennifer Anderson said of Anastasia. “We can’t simulate that very well in practice.”

Olean broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning during which they batted around and picked up four hits while benefiting from a pair of Southwestern errors.

Hannah Nelson walked to open the frame and went to second on a wild pitch before scoring on Emma Edwards’ one-out RBI single. After a pop-up for the second out, leadoff hitter JoJo Gibbons hit an RBI double. Anastasia then helped herself with an RBI single and Mekanna Pancio singled. With runners at first and third, Pancio stole second and an error allowed Anastasia to score from third.

“They hit the ball very well today,” Anderson said.

The Huskies tacked on with three more runs in the top of the sixth inning, aided by three Southwestern errors. Amy Campbell drove in a run with a groundout before a pair of runs scored on wild pitches.

“We didn’t help ourselves today,” Anderson said. “We made a few errors in the field and we weren’t hitting very well.”

Olean’s final two runs scored in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk and Nelson’s RBI fielder’s choice.

Katie Lowe threw the opening five innings for the Trojans, striking out four. Sofia Genareo covered the final two innings and struck out one.

The Huskies took a 2-0 lead early as Campbell tripled and scored on an error in the second inning before Gibbons doubled and scored on Pancio’s triple in the third inning.

Southwestern answered with a third-inning run of its own as Teagan Shedd singled, went to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout before scoring on Alli Durnell’s groundout to second base.

“We had a couple of great hits,” Anderson said, “but we couldn’t string them together.”

The Trojans’ final run crossed in the seventh when Morgan Curry doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Durnell single.

Southwestern returns to action Tuesday against Maple Grove at Bemus Point Elementary School while Olean will host Allegany-Limestone that same afternoon.

“You can’t go and bury your head in the sand,” Anderson said. “We have to learn from what we did, figure things out and set the straight.”

NOTES: Edwards, the Huskies’ No. 8 hitter, had four singles; Gibbons had three hits, including a pair of doubles; and Pancio had two hits with a triple. … Shedd and Durnell each had two singles; Curry doubled; and Sofia Genareo, Madison Cresanti and Brynn Conley each singled for the Trojans.
