Jayhawks Crowned Region 3 Champs

JAMESTOWN — Jamestown Community College’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have been named the NJCAA Region 3 champions after each team went a perfect 4-0 in the Western New York Athletic Conference this season.

Genesee CC was named runnerup for the women while Erie CC was named runnerup for the men.

The 2021 NJCAA Region 3 Championships were canceled due to COVID-19 protocols within the Cougars and Kats programs.

The Jayhawks have seen great success in the pool thus far this season after a three-year hiatus.

Sophomore Karianne Yuchnitz (Panama/Panama Central School) has been outstanding in the pool, setting new records in the 50-yard freestyle (24.80) and 100-yard freestyle (55.38) on three different occasions this season.

Freshman Tia Moppert (Gowanda/Gowanda Central School) has set a new mark in the 100-yard butterfly (1:08.35) with freshman Jade Vidas (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Parktown High School for Girls) set the record in the 100-yard individual medley (1:10.65).

The team of Yuchnitz, Moppert, Anna Burt (Jamestown/Jamestown High School) and Lillian Baer (Jamestown/Maple Grove Junior-Senior High School) have also shined in the pool, setting the new mark in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:44.77.

On the men’s side, freshman Matthew Fennell (Fourways Garden, Johannesburg, South Africa/King Edwards VII School) has set a new time in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 1:10.02. Fennell broke the previous time of 1:10.68 set by teammate Eathan Johnson (Panama/Panama Central School).

The Jayhawks will be back in action on Wednesday, April 28, as they travel to Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Florida, to compete in the 2021 NJCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
