Drake Pours In 29 As Red Raiders Roll, 88-57

Jamestown’s defense lived up to its advanced billing.

Trey Drake’s marksmanship from beyond the arc did, too.

Added together, it was more than enough for the red-hot Red Raiders to roll past Frontier, 88-57, in an Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 basketball game at McElrath Gymnasium on Friday night.

With just a couple weeks remaining in the regular season, Jamestown (7-1, 6-0) has its sights on the top seed heading into the Section VI Class AA playoffs.

And, with the way the Red Raiders have played of late, it’s a very real possibility that could become reality in March.

“I was really proud of how we played on defense,” Coach Ben Drake said. “We were suffocating. Frontier was having a difficult time getting anything going on offense. We just didn’t give them any breathing room.”

Meanwhile, Trey Drake, the coach’s son, was making the Falcons pay on the other end of the court, drilling eight 3-pointers on his way to 29 points, one of four Jamestown players to score in double figures. Junior Jaral Farmer added 13 points, and senior Simeon Leeper and junior Jaylen Butera contributed 10 apiece. Senior Elijah Rojas finished with 9 points and eight assists in what turned out to be a basketball clinic.

Six different Red Raiders scored in the game’s first four minutes during which the hosts opened up an 18-2 lead. The margin grew to 26-7 by quarter’s end and 53-23 at intermission. Jamestown’s final bucket before the break was a trey by Drake, his fourth of the half.

He was just getting warmed up.

In the third quarter, he added four more 3-pointers as the lead ballooned to 76-31.

“Trey has really been shooting the ball well in the last week or so,” Coach Drake said. “It’s nice to see him playing and shooting with confidence. Him doing that takes our team game to a different level, because people get so focused on our inside game, and that opens up and we become that much harder to guard.”

Which brings us back to Jamestown’s standing among other Class AA school’s in the section.

“The goal right now is just to keep winning these league games, this year in particular, knowing that all the (playoff) games are at the higher seed,” Coach Drake said. “If we win out, we’d be home throughout the playoffs, and that’s huge. (Class) AA is always a dogfight. … If we win out, we would get that No. 1 seed. We just have to take it a game at a time and, hopefully, put ourselves in good position.”

NOTES: As a team, Jamestown shot 35 of 69 from the field and 11 of 26 from the arc. … For his part, Trey Drake connected on 10 of 15 from the floor, including 8 of 12 from distance. He also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. … Butera had a fine all-around game. In addition to his 10 points, he had six rebounds, five steals and three assists. … Farmer added four rebounds and three blocked shots. … The only concern for Jamestown was an ankle injury to senior forward Demarri Jones, who left the game in the first half and did not return. … Brandon Okie led Frontier with 15 points and teammates Conor Foley and Christian Velasquez added 13 and 12, respectively. … The Falcons were 17 of 46 from the floor and committed 20 turnovers. By comparison, the Red Raiders were guilty of only seven. … Jamestown is on the road for two games next week — at Orchard Park on Tuesday and at Williamsville North on Thursday — before returning home for a game against Clarence next Saturday. … In the junior varsity game, Jamestown downed Frontier, 68-62, to improve to 4-1 as Sean Paige poured in 28 points and Bishop Butts finished with 18.
