Leeper Nets 20 Points, JHS Boys Upend Clarence, 62-48

CLARENCE — Jaylen Butera played lock-down defense, and Simeon Leeper, Trey Drake and Elijah Rojas took care of things on the offensive end as Jamestown downed Clarence, 62-48, in an Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 basketball game Thursday afternoon.

The victory raised the Red Raiders’ record to 3-0 in the division and 4-1 overall heading into Saturday’s 1:30 p.m. home game against rival Lancaster.

“Saturday is a huge game for us,” Jamestown coach Ben Drake said. “Lancaster is off to a good start (3-0 in the league), and I knew they would definitely be one of the better teams in the league this year. We had good battles with them last year. I think Saturday should be a dogfight. We need to come out ready to go and defend our home court.”

The Red Raiders did pretty well on the road yesterday.

Leading 18-17 after the first quarter, Elijah Rojas scored 9 of his 13 points in the second period to lead Jamestown on an 18-11 run. By the end of the third quarter, the Red Raiders’ lead grew to 13 and they held off the Red Devils the rest of the way.

Leeper had an especially strong performance. Coming off the bench, he scored a game-high 20 points and nailed four 3-pointers, the same number that Trey Drake (14 points) had.

“Simeon … gave us a real spark,” Coach Drake said. “We were really trying hard to get the ball inside and we did a nice job early on. Clarence was trying to take that away, and Simeon and Trey were able to knock down some open 3-pointers for us today. That’s an important piece for us to be a more well-rounded offensive team.”

Trey Drake connected on 4 of 8 attempts from distance, while Leeper was 4 of 12.

Finally, Butera received rave reviews from his coach after being tasked with guarding Jack Ainello, a returning first-team all-league performer who finished with 12 points.

“Jaylen did a great job on him and really made him earn his points,” Coach Drake said.

Statistically, Rojas finished with five assists and four steals; and Demarri Jones grabbed 12 rebounds to go with his 9 points.
