Maple Grove Digs Out Of Hole To Beat Frewsburg

Maple Grove outscored Frewsburg, 48-31, in the second half to rally for an 81-73 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West victory Thursday on Dutch Hollow Road.

The Bears (1-1, 1-1) led 12-0 early in the game, made 14 3-pointers, and got 34 points from Jonathan Brito in his debut.

Frewsburg won its opener against Brocton by 53 points on Feb. 10, but was then quarantined for 10 days before returning to game action Thursday evening.

Cam Crist led the Red Dragons (6-1, 6-1) with 22 points and six steals to go along with eight rebounds. Adam Marsh added 18 points; Drew Kelemen had 15 points; Tucker Fenton had 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds; and Jake Vaillancourt had 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Traden Gray had 20 points and 13 rebounds; Gavin Smith had four assists, four rebounds and two steals; and Zack Carr had four assists for the Bears.

T’BIRDS ESCAPE

SILVER CREEK — A potential game-winning 3-pointer was taken after the final buzzer as Chautauqua Lake held on for a 50-49 Division 1 East win over Silver Creek.

The Thunderbirds’ Alex Godfrey converted a three-point play to put his team up four before the Black Knights’ Matt Woleben made a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game with about a minute remaining.

After both teams failed to convert at the foul line, Silver Creek’s last chance came late.

Noah Adams led the Thunderbirds (4-3, 3-1) with 18 points and six steals; Nate Engdahl had eight rebounds and four steals; and Luke Waters grabbed six rebounds.

Woleben finished with 17 points; Sam Braidich had 17 points, six rebounds and three steals; and Xyon Wolverton grabbed 10 rebounds for the Black Knights (3-4, 2-3).

WESTFIELD — Darien Swanson approached a quadruple-double as Westfield coasted past Panama for a 60-36 Division 2 West victory.

Swanson had 21 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and eight steals for the Wolverines (2-3, 2-3). Ethan Weingart added 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

Nick Huffman had 8 points and 14 rebounds; Gabe Roth had 8 points; and Kurtis Olson grabbed 14 rebounds for the Panthers (0-5, 0-5).

COUGARS COME CLOSE

SINCLAIRVILLE — Just six days after losing by 53 to Sherman, Cassadaga Valley nearly took down the Wildcats.

Derek Sears hit three 3-pointers during the third quarter as Sherman built a 34-25 lead before holding on for a 43-40 Division 2 West win.

The Cougars (1-7, 1-5) had a chance to tie late, but a 3-pointer missed with seconds remaining.

Sears led the Wildcats (4-2, 4-2) with 13 points; Gerald Carris had 11 points, 11 rebounds and four steals; Elijah Kioko grabbed 10 rebounds; and John Swabik had nine rebounds.

Connor Austin led Cassadaga Valley with 13 points and 11 rebounds; Braden LeBaron had 9 points; and Drake Pierce picked up four steals.

“We got two good days of practice in a row which we haven’t had yet this year,” Cassadaga Valley coach Cody Jacobson said was the difference between Thursday night and last Friday. “It was the best team defense we’ve played. It was an entire team effort to contain Swabik and Carris.

FRANKLINVILLE — A mid-court heave in the final seconds bounced off the rim and Ellicottville remained undefeated with a 47-44 Division 2 East victory over Franklinville.

Clayton Rowland led the Eagles (6-0, 4-0) with 15 points, 16 rebounds and four assists; Leif Jimerson and Logan Grinols each scored 10 points; and Wyatt Chudy grabbed seven rebounds.

Logan Frank led the Panthers (4-2, 4-1) with 20 points, 12 rebounds and four assists while Blake Frank had 18 points, five rebounds and three assists.

FALCONER — Jaiden Huntington led a balanced scoring attack with 18 points and Randolph forced 29 turnovers en route to a 65-18 Division 1 East victory over Falconer.

Carson Conley added 12 points and Ashton Bushey chipped in 8 as every Cardinal on the roster scored.

Randolph (5-2) led 29-14 at halftime and then outscored the Golden Falcons, 36-4, after the break.

Nick Erickson led Falconer with 11 points.
