Following weeks of uncertainty and pandemic preparation some of the finest girls soccer programs in Section VI will return to the pitch today to begin the 2020 season.

Westfield will travel to meet Dunkirk for the first contest of the year at 10 a.m., while the Southwestern Trojans will visit Frewsburg for a 7 p.m. contest under the lights at the school’s football field.

Frewsburg will aim to follow up on a strong 15-5 campaign from a year ago, one that included a pair of hard-fought postseason victories.

The Bears used their defense and some opportune scoring to earn 1-0 victories over Maple Grove and Westfield in last year’s Class C semifinal and final, respectively.

Advancing to the Far West Regionals at Williamsville East High School, Frewsburg’s year came to an end against Section V champion Marino and New York state’s all-time leading scorer Chloe DeLyser.

Rachel Annis, Amanda Dilts and Emma Edwards have been lost to graduation, leaving Frewsburg with this year’s seniors Madison Caflisch, Ava Hultberg and Madison Voty.

Voty is expected to continue to play a key role in goal, while Samantha Annis will return after scoring a team-high seven goals last season.

Southwestern posted a 10-5 record last season, falling to Royalton-Hartland by two goals in the Class B-2 postseason.

Senior captain Allison Lundmark returns for the Trojans this year after an eight-goal, seven-assist campaign a year ago.

Junior Emily Kimball also grabbed eight goals and seven helpers last year, and will return for the Trojans along with seniors Cora Casselman, Kylee Dibble and Sydney Segrue.

Gone to graduation for Southwestern are Lotte Kranzo, Audrey Ducat, captain Gianna Hoose, captain Kim Truver and captain Hanna Johnson.

The Trojans will be looking to find a replacement between the pipes for Johnson, who stopped 121 balls last year.

That could end up being junior Brynne Conley, who saw some time in net last season.

After falling to Frewsburg, Westfield would finish 2019 with a 15-3 record behind 15 goals and 12 assists from Katie Bodenmiller, and a 13-goal four-assist campaign from Shaela Barresi.

While Bodenmiller is lost to graduation, Barresi will return along with seniors Heather Johnston, Juli Smith, McKenzie Wolfe, Christine Wdowiasz, Angel Busch and Phoenix Carvella.

Busch will anchor the Wolverines defense after recording 229 saves and allowing seven goals in 2019.

Dunkirk will look to build off of its 2019 campaign, returning seniors Kandyce Earing, Arianna Quinones and fourth-year captain Mia Piede.

Kaitlyn Davis led the Marauders offense a year ago, while goaltender Kymilondjra Nance anchored the defense. Nance has been lost to graduation.
