Gaining entry to the U.S. Military Academy is no small feat. Fact is, only about 10 percent of applicants are admitted. What, then, are the odds that two Chautauqua County residents would be a captain of a varsity sport at West Point at the same time?

Slim and none, right?

Well, Clayton Hanson of Jamestown and Ryan Hetrick of Bemus Point are defying those odds.

Hanson, a graduate of Southwestern Central School, is a senior captain on the Black Knights rifle team, while Hetrick, a Maple Grove Junior-Senior High School alumnus, is a senior co-captain on the school’s wrestling team.

Hanson, a two-time All-American, posted an average score of 582.3 in smallbore during the 2019-20 season and hit at least the 580 mark in all but one match. His high score in smallbore came in the All-Academy President’s Trophy Match last November when he shot a 586. Hanson also earned individual qualifications for the NCAA Rifle Championship, qualifying in smallbore.

Hetrick, meanwhile, competed at 133 pounds as a junior in 2019-2020, posting an 11-7 record. Wrestling in five tournaments, he opened the year with a third-place finish at the Princeton Open; notched a second-place finish at the Cornell Open; and finished third at the Shorty Hitchcock Open. His career record stands at 40-33.

Hanson, who was a co-captain as a sophomore and captain as a junior, is majoring in mechanical engineering. He is the son of Todd and Barb Hanson.

Hetrick, a four-year letter winner at Maple Grove and a three-time place winner at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships, is majoring in systems engineering. He is the son of Mark and Sally Hetrick.
