Blazers Add Former Bonnie Adams

St. Bonaventure alumnus Jaylen Adams is returning to the NBA.

After a stellar season in the NBA G League where he finished runner-up in the MVP voting, he has signed to play with the Portland Trail Blazers when NBA teams resume play later this month. The deal was first announced by ESPN NBA insider and St. Bonaventure graduate Adrian Wojnarowski. Portland confirmed the signing Wednesday.

Adams will replace Trevor Ariza on the Portland roster after averaging 21 points per game while with the Wisconsin Herd in the G League this season.

He will start his second NBA stint when he joins the Trail Blazers for the league’s restart in Orlando. He signed a two-way contract with Atlanta two summers ago, parlaying that into a spot with the Hawks for much of the 2018-19 season.

The former Atlantic 10 co-Player of the Year and three-time First Team All-Conference selection was named to the All-NBA G League First Team as well last week after tallying double figures in 31 games including four 30-point efforts. Adams was named Player of the Month for January when he averaged 22.6 points and 5.9 assists on 50.6 percent shooting. He played on the 2020 USA FIBA AmeriCup qualifying team in February in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C.

He is the top-scoring guard in St. Bonaventure history with 1,912 points.

Portland sits 3.5 games behind Memphis for the eighth seed in the West, tied with New Orleans and Sacramento. The NBA is slated to resume play July 30 in an Orlando “bubble” inside the confines of Disney World. Players will report to Orlando July 7-8 for training camp.

By joining Portland, Adams becomes another Bonnies player in recent years to play a role with the organization. David Vanterpool, who was one of 20 players including Adams selected to Bonaventure’s All-Time Team this past year, served as an assistant coach for the Trail Blazers for several seasons before becoming Associate Head Coach in Minnesota prior to this season.
