Jamestown Community College and Chautauqua Golf Club should be just a little more than a month away from hosting the NJCAA Division III Golf Championships for the 21st consecutive year.

The COVID-19 pandemic, however, has prevented that from happening.

Despite the cancellation of this year’s tournament, the school announced Wednesday afternoon that its bid to host the tournament through 2022 has been approved by the NJCAA. The two-year agreement — only Grand Junction, Colorado (Division I baseball) and Hutchinson, Kansas (Division I men’s basketball) have hosted consecutive NJCAA national tournaments longer — left George Sisson, tournament director and Jamestown CC athletic director, a happy man.

“We are proud of the fact we have hosted this event for the last 20 years,” Sisson said. “We have garnered the support of so many people and organizations that make this event so awesome for the participants. We look forward to crowning more champions on the course looking over Chautauqua Lake — a great place for great memories.”

There have been plenty of memorable moments the last two decades, including:

¯ Dante Migliore of Hudson Valley CC needing five playoff holes before his eagle on the fifth hole on the Lake Course finally defeated Chase Cole of Georgia Northwest Tech for medalist honors in 2016.

¯ A year earlier, Cincinnati State coach Scott Webb was so excited after his team claimed the national title that he stripped to his underwear, took off running and leaped into the pond that borders the 18th fairway.

¯ And last year, Georgia Military College claimed the title by a single shot over Sandhills (North Carolina) CC.

One can only hope the 2021 tournament, which will be held June 8-11, and the 2022 event, scheduled for June 7-10, will have the same kind of drama.

“It keeps Jamestown Community College relevant in (terms of) national recognition,” Sisson said of the successful two-year bid. “I think that’s really cool. … It’s been a relationship that has grown. We’re very thankful to have the opportunity to continue.”
