Jamestown Falls To Orchard Park

BUFFALO — Jamestown coach Ben Drake has made a habit of guiding his teams to the Section VI Class AA Final Four in his 22 years at the helm.

Nineteen times, to be exact.

But it’s not likely that the Red Raiders had a tougher shooting quarter in any of the previous 18 appearances than they did in the final period of Wednesday night’s semifinal at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.

Orchard Park had a lot to do with that.

Leading by five points 10 seconds into the fourth quarter, the second-seeded Red Raiders didn’t score again for nearly seven minutes and fell to the Quakers, the No. 3 seed, 53-43.

Orchard Park (16-6) will now meet No. 5 Lancaster, which upset No. 1 Niagara Falls in the other semifinal Tuesday night, in the sectional title game on Saturday afternoon back at Buffalo State.

Meanwhile, the Red Raiders, who had beaten the Quakers twice during the regular season, finish 15-7.

Ironically, Jamestown appeared to be in a good position after a rocky first quarter. In fact, when Demarri Jones converted a layup in the final seconds of the third quarter and Jaral Farmer did the same on the Red Raiders’ first possession of the final period, Jamestown led, 38-33.

And then it slowly began to slip away.

“We just went through a brutal stretch of basketball at the offensive end,” Drake said.

Ethan Swiatek converted a three-point play, Tino Mancabelli and Swiatek each hit a free throw, and Jackson Roskow drilled a trey, giving Orchard Park a five-point lead, 43-38 with 4:41 left.

Drake called a timeout only to have the Red Raiders commit a turnover and, a half-minute later miss a pair of free throws. Twenty-five seconds after that, Swiatek scored on a drive followed shortly after by a free throw from Brad Fowler, which pushed the Quakers’ lead to 46-38 with 2:55 left.

Jamestown didn’t get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Jones finally broke the drought when he converted a layup with 1:10 remaining, cutting the deficit to 48-40, but the Quakers, who outscored their rivals, 20-7, in the final period, converted five of six free throws in the final minute to secure the win and send them into the title game.

“We had some opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on,” Drake said. “We had some decent looks. We didn’t move the ball very well during that stretch. The ball was kind of stalling in our hands. We got out of sync in a big way during that fourth quarter.”

The statistics show how out of sync Jamestown was.

While Orchard Park shot a blistering 55% (17 of 31) from the field and connected on 18 of 30 free throw attempts, the Red Raiders were just 39% (19 of 49) from the floor and were a miserable 2 of 10 from the foul line. Jones finished with 17 points on 8 of 14 from the field, but had only 4 points after intermission, and Elijah Rojas added 15 points — 11 in the third quarter — on 7 of 14 shooting. The rest of the team, however, managed just four field goals combined.

“I think we all felt pretty good as to where we were at the in the fourth quarter with the way the second and third quarters went,” Drake said. “Basketball is a game of runs and there was just a huge momentum shift where they got some good shots inside and we were having a hard time just getting shots. We had a lot of turnovers there in the fourth quarter and just really struggled in a big way.”

Despite the loss, Jamestown could very well be in the hunt for a return trip to Buffalo State next year as it graduates just three players.

“We just have to turn out attention to the offseason to put ourselves in a better position when we’re up here next year,” Drake said. “I expect us to be here next year.”

NOTES: Swiatek led Orchard Park with 18 points, Mancabelli had 11 and Fowler and Roskow added 10 apiece. … Jones led Jamestown with 11 rebounds, Rojas had five assists, and Jordan Crofoot added three steals. … According to Western New York boys basketball guru Chad Andrews, Saturday’s championship game will mark the first time since 2000 that neither Jamestown nor Niagara Falls will be play for the title.
