Drake Selected Coach Of The Year; Rojas Chosen To 2nd Team

Jamestown claimed the Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 regular-season boys basketball championship a little more than a week ago.

Not coincidentally, Demarri Jones was at the top of his game.

In the Red Raiders’ 56-47 victory over Orchard Park, the 6-foot-3 forward scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, which was actually a microcosm of much of his junior season.

The league coaches have taken notice, enough so that Jones has been named the ECIC Division 1 Player of the Year.

The numbers show why.

In 20 games — all starts — Jones is averaging 17.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 58% from the field (150 of 259) and 62% from the foul line (47 of 76). In addition, he has 25 steals, blocked 10 shots and taken five charges. Jones and the rest of the Red Raiders (14-6) will meet Clarence (7-13) in a Section VI Class AA quarterfinal at 1 p.m. Saturday at McElrath Gymnasium.

Joining Jones on the first team are senior forward Tino Mancabelli of Orchard Park; senior guard Breht Swiech of Williamsville North; junior guard Zach Inaello of Clarence; junior forward Joe Harrington of Lancaster; and senior guard Nate Ryniec of West Seneca West.

Jones wasn’t the only member of the Red Raiders’ program to receive ECIC Division 1 honors.

Coach Ben Drake was named the Coach of the Year and junior guard Elijah Rojas was named to the second team.

Drake, who has been Jamestown’s varsity head coach since the 1998-99 season, has been a coach-of-the-year recipient multiple times and has guided the Red Raiders to six Section VI championships and two trips to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AA championship game. His career record at his alma mater stands at 371-123.

Meanwhile, Rojas is averaging 12.2 points, 4.6 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.5 rebounds per game.

Joining Rojas on the second team are senior forward Scott Hopkins of Williamsville North; senior forward Bradley Fowler of Orchard Park; junior guard Conor Foley of Frontier; senior guard David Bass of Williamsville North; and senior forward Nate Hoelig of Frontier.

Honorable-mention selections are senior guards Gianluca Fulciniti and Jackson Jerebko of Lancaster; senior guard Connor Schermerhorn of West Seneca West; senior guard Ethan Swiatek of Orchard Park; senior guard Trevor Reformat of Lancaster; senior guard Chase Klein of Orchard Park; senior guard Zach Fahay of West Seneca West; and junior forward Brandon Okie of Frontier.
