Sparked by a strong defensive effort, Southwestern opened a big, early lead and coasted to a 62-39 victory over Fredonia in Division 1 West girls basketball game Thursday night.

Sofia Genareo led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds; and Gianna Hoose added 16 points, eight rebounds and six steals as the Trojans improved to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the division.

“Our defense tonight was stellar,” Southwestern coach Dave Turnbull said. “The last few games we’ve gotten better and better. … Defense kind of drives our offense and allows us to get easy shots in transition. It gets us going a little quicker.

“Slowly, but surely we’re getting to where we need to be.”

The Trojans led 16-6 after the first quarter, 32-13 at the break and 53-23 heading into the final period.
