Sherman Holds Off Maple Grove

SHERMAN — Despite being outscored in the second and third quarters, Sherman used a strong start and a strong finish to defeat Maple Grove 64-52 in a nonleague matchup at home on Tuesday night.

“We got off to a great start,” Wildcats coach Cory Emory said after the victory. “Maple Grove slowly chipped away at the lead all throughout the game, but we finally made a few buckets and made free throws down the stretch.”

The Red Dragons trimmed the once 25-7 deficit to four at the end of the third quarter and came within a bucket of taking the lead in the fourth. But the Wildcats hit big shots in crunch time to extend the lead and seal the victory thanks to 27 points and eight rebounds by Gerald Carris and a double-double by John Swabik, who added 13 and 10. Keith Gormley led the Wildcats on the boards, grabbing 11 rebounds.

Maple Grove was led by Tyler McPherson, who scored 17 points, draining three 3-pointers in the effort, and Peter Auer who scored 15 and drained two from behind the arc. Drew Kelemen recorded five steals for the Red Dragons.
