FALCONER — Grace Penhollow was The Post-Journal Girls Soccer Player of the Year last fall.

She knows her way around the pitch.

After taking a year off from basketball, the Falconer senior is showing she can make an impact on the court as well.

Penhollow came off the bench to score a game-high 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Golden Falcons beat Randolph, 58-34, in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 East action Thursday evening.

“Grace had her junior year off,” Falconer head coach Emily Scholeno said. “She’s come back her senior year and really jumped right back into the game.”

Penhollow led a trio of Falconer girls in double figures as sophomores Ava Fenton and Grace Lundmark each chipped in with 12 points.

“We played a good game against Franklinville. They are a great team, so it was nice to see some tough competition,” Scholeno said about a 63-42 loss to the league-leading Panthers on Monday. “The girls came back here and did what they had to do.”

Freshman Kyra Pence and seventh-grader Payton Morrison led the short-handed Cardinals with 13 points apiece.

Randolph’s junior leading scorer Sydney Hvizdzak injured herself in practice Wednesday and tried to give it a go in warmups Thursday, but was forced to watch the game from the sidelines.

Falconer took advantage of the Cardinals being without one of their most experienced players, forcing the visitors into 11 first-half turnovers, which the Golden Falcons turned into 11 points at the other end of the floor.

“It was kind of a quick game change,” Scholeno said. “We were prepared for (Hvizdzak) and had a couple of our girls ready to play defense on her. We had to change gears really quick.”

For the game, Randolph turned the ball over 18 times and Falconer turned it into 16 points.

“We’ve been without Sydney before. At Olean, she fouled out in the third quarter and we still did well,” Randolph head coach Sean Huntington said. “Losing her at the beginning of the game, it just got into their minds a little too much. They’re young. I think we showed our youth really bad in the first quarter with a lot of turnovers.”

Sophomore Courtnee Peterson hit a pair of free throws that gave the Golden Falcons a 4-3 lead early and they never trailed from there. Penhollow scored the final six points of the opening quarter as her team led 16-5 after eight minutes.

In the second quarter, Lundmark scored 7 points, including a 3-pointer, and Fenton added 5 points, including a 3-pointer of her own, as Falconer built up a 34-15 halftime advantage.

“We got kids in and out,” Scholeno said, “and they all kind of worked together.”

The Cardinals actually hung with Falconer in the second half as Pence scored 10 of her 13 points after the break, but by that point it was much too little too late.

“The first half wasn’t good, but they settled down,” Huntington said. “Coming out, I thought we played a decent third quarter. … We’re a little wounded right now, but that’s life.”

NOTES: Peterson had eight rebounds and three steals; Lundmark grabbed seven rebounds; and Fenton had six assists and three steals for Falconer. … Pence had nine rebounds, four steals and three assists while sophomore Tyra Clark grabbed five rebounds, blocked two shots and picked up two steals for Randolph. … The Golden Falcons were 23 of 60 (38.3%) from the field, including 2 of 8 (25.0%) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 15 times. … The Cardinals were 11 of 54 (20.4%) from the field, including 3 of 18 (16.7%) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 18 times. … Randolph won the jayvee game, 41-31.
