Only days after helping Maine to an NBA G League victory over Erie, Jaysean Paige received more good news.

The former Jamestown High School star learned Thursday evening that he was drafted No. 7 overall by Indios De Mayaguez, a team in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional.

The Indios franchise, located in western Puerto Rico, first entered the league, according to Wikipedia, in 1956, and Mayaguez has been its home city for all but five of the team’s active seasons.

“I’ll report after the (G League) season,” Paige said in a text message to The Post-Journal on Friday afternoon. “I’m looking forward to it. It’s another chapter. It should be fun. I have a lot of family there that haven’t got to see me play before.”

They should be in for a treat.

In 22 games with the Red Claws, the 6-foot-2 guard is averaging 9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game, helping them to a 17-7 record and second place in the Eastern Conference.

In 18 minutes against the Bayhawks on Tuesday night at Erie Insurance Arena, Paige scored 16 points on 7 of 12 shooting, to go along with three rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Paige’s first-round selection is the just the latest in a basketball odyssey that has taken him from Jamestown to Perry County (Kentucky) High School (he graduated from the latter school in 2012); to the College of Southern Idaho and Moberly Area Community College; to West Virginia University; to the Oettinger Rockets of the Germany’s Pro A League; to Karpos Sokoli in the Macedonian Second League; to the Newcastle Eagles of the British Basketball League (where he was the league’s Most Valuable Player during the 2017-18 season); and, finally, to the Red Claws.

Paige’s best game of the G League season so far was a 25-point effort against the Delaware Blue Coats in December.
