Jamestown wasted no time shaking off any lingering effects from its overtime loss over the weekend.

Simeon Leeper and Elijah Rojas saw to that.

Leeper scored 22 points and added eight steals, and Rojas added 22 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals to propel the Red Raiders to a 65-44 victory over Frontier in an Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 basketball game at McElrath Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

And, really, it wasn’t as close as the final score might indicate.

Jamestown, which suffered an 80-78 overtime loss at Olean on Saturday, wasted little time in putting its divisional rival away, racing to a 19-2 lead after the first quarter, a margin that grew to 34-2 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half. The Falcons did tally the final two field goals of the second quarter, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but they still trailed 34-7 at the break.

There was little suspense after that.

How dominant were the Red Raiders (2-1, 1-0) in the first 16 minutes?

All told, they shot 14 of 29 from the floor and committed four turnovers. By comparison, Frontier was only 3 of 20 from the field and were guilty of 13 turnovers.

The Falcons played much better in the final two periods — they drilled five 3-pointers in the third quarter to pull within 15 points — but the damage had already been done. Entering the fourth quarter, the Red Raiders led, 51-35, and breezed the rest of the way.

“I was really happy with our defense,” Jamestown coach Ben Drake said. “The first 15 minutes was a defensive clinic. We got into the passing lanes, got some easy ones at the other end, and offensively I thought we passed the ball well, found the open man and got some easy shots for each other.”

The catalysts for that were Leeper and Rojas.

“I liked the way they played tonight,” Drake said. “They have the potential to be very good defenders. They’re both quick and see things happening. The key with them is not to gamble. We made some defensive mistakes (last) weekend that hopefully we learned from.”

Next on the schedule is a road trip to Lancaster on Thursday.

“Lancaster is a big, physical team. They’ll be very aggressive,” Drake said. “They have some good athletes who have a lot of experience. That will be a challenge. It’s not an easy place to play.”

NOTES: Behind 17 points from Greg Brumagin, Jamestown (2-1) won the junior varsity game, 44-21.
