Muhlenberg To Host DIII Semifinal On Saturday

Muhlenberg College has been selected to host a semifinal game in the NCAA Division III football playoffs against North Central (Ill.) at noon Saturday.

The other Division III semifinal has St. John’s (Minn.) traveling to Wisconsin-Whitewater. Both games will be televised on ESPN3.

The semifinal winners advance to the Stagg Bowl, scheduled for Friday, Dec.20, in Shenandoah, Texas.

The Mules (13-0), coached by Jamestown native Nate Milne and ranked fourth in Division III, are the only undefeated team left in the playoffs. After falling in the quarterfinals last year, Muhlenberg earned the first semifinal berth in program history with a 24-8 win at Salisbury.

Muhlenberg has allowed only eight points in its three playoff wins, shutting out MIT (38-0) and Brockport (42-0) in the first two rounds. The Mules were the first team in the history of the Division III playoffs to record shutouts in the first two rounds and have outscored their three playoff opponents 104-8.

North Central (12-1) is making its second semifinal appearance; in 2013, the Cardinals suffered a one-point loss to Mount Union in the semis. North Central defeated Mount Union, 59-52, in the second round of this year’s playoffs and toppled Delaware Valley, 31-14, in the quarterfinals.

The fifth-ranked Cardinals are second in Division III in both scoring offense (53.2 points per game) and total offense (565.2 yards per game).
