Wright, Pannes, Wolfer Honored

Some recognizable names to fans of local high school football are finalists for postseason hardware.

Southwestern senior running back/linebacker Tywon Wright is one of 10 up for the 48th annual Connolly Cup while Trojans senior teammate Cooper Pannes and Franklinville/Ellicottville senior Zack Wolfer are finalists for the Trench Trophy.

Wright has led the Trojans to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C Western semifinal with 1,504 yards rushing and 25 touchdowns this season. In each of the past two weekends, Wright has scored five touchdowns as Southwestern has beaten Wilson in the Section VI final and Letchworth/Warsaw in the Far West Regional.

The senior also leads the Trojans in solo tackles with 23 while he has been in on 52 total. He has 13 tackles for a loss and four sacks with one interception and one fumble recovery.

One of Wright’s main blockers has been Pannes. Southwestern’s offense has amassed over 3,700 total yards this fall with 66 touchdowns. Defensively, Pannes leads the Trojans in sacks with 11 and tackles for a loss with 26. He has recovered three fumbles and been in on 76 tackles, including 18 solo.

Wolfer was a key cog in the Titans offensive and defensive lines. The tackle/defensive end helped Franklinville/Ellicottville amass more than 2,800 total yards and score 42 touchdowns offensively. On defense, Wolfer led the Titans with 11 tackles for a loss and five sacks while recovering three fumbles. He was also in on 51 tackles, including 20 solo.

Other Connolly Cup finalists are Amherst’s Anthony McCarley, Bennett’s Djae Perry, Canisius’ C.J. Ozolins, South Park’s Marqwan Fluitt, South Park’s Keith Jackson, St. Francis’ Jake Ritts St. Francis’ Xzavier Janczylik, St. Joe’s Micah Brown and Starpoint’s Joe Carlson.

The Connolly Cup winner will be announced on Saturday, Dec. 7 at a luncheon held at Ilio Dipaolo’s Restaurant in Blasdell.

Additional finalists for the Trench Trophy are Amherst’s Ryan Bitka, Hamburg’s Geno Bruce, Lancaster’s Conor Mahony, North Tonawanda’s Tim Osborn, St. Francis’ Eric Schon, Williamsville South’s A.J. Urbaniak, WNY Maritime/Health Sciences’ Teryon Vernon, St. Joe’s Jason Walker, Bennett’s Jeremiah Williams and Albion’s Cody Wilson.

All of the Trench Trophy finalists will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Dec. 4 banquet, where the winner will also be named.
