JCC Men, Women Suffer Basketball Setbacks

The Jamestown Community College men’s basketball team fell behind 10-0 to start and it couldn’t recover, falling to visiting Montgomery (Maryland) College, 101-82, in an NJCAA basketball game Saturday evening at the Physical Education Complex.

The Jayhawks (2-2) were once again led offensively by Sheick Kourmora, who scored 26 points off the bench. Kourmora shot an efficient 9-for-11 from the field, including four 3-pointers. Isaac Allen dropped 16 points while Donathan Daniels added 10. Daniels and Jake Hougan both had a team-high six rebounds.

By halftime, the Jayhawks trailed, 54-32, and couldn’t get closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Isaiah Jennings led the way for Montgomery, scoring 34 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out seven assists. Agyei Edwards had 21 points, Camren Ashby 17 and Nicholas Johnson 12.

“I do feel like we’re making progress,” Jayhawks’ head coach Xavier Churnac said. “We need to clean up a few of our mistakes, whether it’s our defensive rotations or just decision making. They’re learning. They’re starting to be able to correct their own mistakes.”

The Jayhawks will be off until Tuesday, Nov. 19, when they host Pitt-Titusville at 7 p.m.

JAYHAWKS FALL TO SULLIVAN CC

SHELLDRAKE — Sullivan County Community College was on fire from beyond the arc and rolled to a 108-70 NJCAA victory over Jamestown CC on Saturday.

Infinity Hammonds led four players in double figures with 21 points. Traynise Delaney added 19, Johnahyah Curry 14 and Ariana Buchanan 10. All told, the hosts shot 18 of 32 from distance, led 42-31 at the break and put the game away with 66 second-half points.

Jamestown CC was led by Gabby Iuculano and Abi Lisciandro with 15 points apiece. Lisciandro also grabbed seven rebounds.

“(Sullivan County CC) was super fast,” Jayhawks coach Travis Wells said. “They weren’t real big, but speed-wise they were just in another gear, and they can shoot. They were deep threes. They were bombs. … The kids aren’t used to closing out on shots that deep.”

Jamestown CC returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 23 when it entertains Cuyahoga CC. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
