UB Professor To Discuss Sports Law At RHJC

The Robert H. Jackson Center is pleased to announce its 2019 Fall Continuing LegalEducation (CLE) Seminar scheduled for Tuesdays at the Jackson Center. Registration opens at 8 a.m.

The event will begin at 8:45 a.m. with “Solar Energy Opportunities and Challenges,” a panel moderated by David P. Flynn, partner at Phillips Lytle, LLC and practice team leader for the firm’s energy, environment, and nanotechnology practice teams.

Panelists for this session include Phillips Lytle attorneys Kevin C. Blake, Dennis W. Elsenbeck, Thomas F. Puchner and David P. Flynn, and Delaware River Solar project manager Daniel Compitello.

From 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., the Honorable Stephen W. Cass, acting Justice of the New York State Supreme Court and Robert H. Jackson Center board member, will facilitate a panel discussion with former and current Chautauqua County Family Court judges entitled “40 Years of Family Court: A Retrospective.”

The event will conclude with a luncheon interview of professor Helen A. “Nellie” Drew from 1-2 p.m. by Gregory L. Peterson, partner at Phillips Lytle and co-founder and board member of the Robert H. Jackson Center. Drew is adjunct faculty at the University at Buffalo Law School and will discuss sports law, discipline of professional athletes, drug testing in sports, NCAA compliance and Title IX.

Drew is Professor of Practice in Sports Law and Director of the Center for the Advancement of Sport at The University at Buffalo School of Law. Drew teaches a variety of courses that incorporate topics such as drug testing in professional sports and professional player contract negotiation and arbitration. Drew is especially interested in the evolving research and litigation concerning concussions in both amateur and professional sports.

A native Western New Yorker, Drew is a lifelong Bills, Sabres and Bulls fan. While attending the School of Law, she developed an independent study research project on alternative dispute resolution in the NHL with Gerry Meehan who was also in-house counsel with the Sabres. Drew was instrumental in negotiating and drafting contracts for Pat LaFontaine, Dominik Hasek and Alexander Mogilny, among others. She also was part of the legal team that handled numerous NHL transactions, including the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, the Ottawa Senators, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the San Jose Sharks.
