Standing at the 50-yard line postgame for the final time as Southwestern’s head football coach, Jehuu Caulcrick reminded his Trojans that they wanted to make a statement to the league, the section and the state Friday night.

Mission accomplished.

As they have so many times during Caulcrick’s four-plus seasons as head coach, the Trojans dominated on both sides of the ball and demoralized Lackawanna to the tune of a 47-0 shutout on homecoming at Charles A. Lawson Field.

“Going into the season, I didn’t think this was how the last talk would be. Hopefully it was going to be in the locker room at the Carrier Dome or something like that,” Caulcrick said as his team left the field. “I just really want to thank the entire community of Lakewood, Celoron and Busti, and the entire school district for supporting me as an ‘outsider’ coming in and taking over this great program.”

Caulcrick’s 32nd win on the sidelines was one of Southwestern’s most impressive during his tenure.

Against a Steelers team that was an Honorable-Mention selection in this week’s New York State Sportswriters Association Class B rankings, the Trojans racked up 444 total yards, including 198 on the ground. Quarterback Aidan Kennedy was 6 of 12 for 246 yards; Tywon Wright ran seven times for 96 yards; and Dom Certo caught three passes for 120 yards.

Defensively, a unit led by defensive coordinator/interim head coach Jake Burkholder held Lackawanna to 96 total yards and forced five turnovers, including three interceptions.

Senior Cooper Pannes had seven tackles, including four for losses, and a sack to go along with a pair of forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

“We talked about coming out and playing with a purpose … playing Trojan football,” Caulcrick said. “We held it together and we did that.”

Southwestern, the state’s No. 3 Class C team according to this week’s NYSSWA rankings, led 19-0 after the opening quarter on a 27-yard Wright touchdown run, a 57-yard Kennedy-to-Wright touchdown pass, and a 1-yard Zishan Munir touchdown run.

“He’s helped me out with so much. He’s taught me so much throughout it all,” said Wright, who transfered to Southwestern last year. “He’s been a great mentor and a great leader. I can’t think him enough for everything that he’s done for me.”

With 6:36 left in the second quarter, Kennedy added a 12-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Bailey on a fourth-and-3. Wright then added another 27-yard touchdown run before Caulcrick used his team’s final two timeouts to get the ball back with under a minute remaining.

On first down from the 46-yard line with 27 seconds remaining, Kennedy found Garrett Swan down the sideline for a 41-yard gain. After spiking the ball with 12 seconds left, Kennedy hit Certo open in the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown that made it 40-0 after a 2-point conversion run by Wright.

“It was definitely an emotional game because it’s coach’s last game,” Certo said postgame. “I’ve known him ever since I was 3 years old washing his car at my neighbor’s house. I’m just really happy with the win and I’m happy we won for Caulcrick.”

After Southwestern’s homecoming court was crowned at halftime, Caulcrick and the Trojans put an exclamation point on the night as Certo’s defender fell down in coverage on a second-and-19 from the 10-yard line and Kennedy hit the senior wideout for a 90-yard touchdown catch and run to make it 47-0 with eight minutes left in the third quarter.

All that remained was for the Trojans defense to finish off their third shutout of the season, and they did that by forcing a turnover on downs, an interception and a punt on Lackawanna’s final three possessions of the night.

“I think we played well in all three phases of the game,” Caulcrick said. “The kids came out and prepared well. They played their hearts out.”

After the clock showed zeroes, Caulcrick, who resigned his position last Saturday morning after accepting a position with the National Football League/Zenith in Detroit to research and develop the safety of player equipment, gathered his troops at midfield.

“You never know what life is going to throw at you,” Caulcrick told his team. ” … Sometimes in life you have to be selfish to be selfless.”

He then turned the floor over to Burkholder, who hopes to guide the Trojans to their first Section VI championship since 2011, when they also played in their last state final.

“We did everything together as a team and as a coaching staff. … It’s not going to be a setback,” Caulcrick said. “They all know what the goal is. They know what we have to do to accomplish these goals.

“I think our guys just answered the call,” he added. “You couldn’t ask for a better send-off.”

NOTES: Caulcrick’s final record will be 32-11 with three Section VI Class C championship game appearances. … Nate Johnson had seven tackles, including three for losses, while Wright had seven tackles, including two for losses, and a sack. … Jon Pearson, Munir and Collin Bentley had interceptions for the Trojans.
