No. 5 Frewsburg Gets By No. 4 Holland On PKs

HOLLAND — After 110 minutes Friday evening, which was the better team between No. 4 Holland and No. 5 Frewsburg couldn’t be decided.

Instead, the teams battled through a penalty-kick shootout.

In the end, the Bears made all four of their attempts while the Lady Dutchmen failed on a pair of attempts sending Frewsburg into the Section VI Class C semifinals with a 2-1 victory.

Now the Bears will have to deal with No. 8 Maple Grove, which upset No. 1 Ellicottville 1-0 in another Friday quarterfinal.

Holland won the coin toss for the shootout and elected to go second.

Kendal Sohl put Frewsburg on top 1-0 before the Lady Dutchmen answered to make it 1-1. Ava Hultberg then found the back of the net for the Bears before their junior goalkeeper Madison Voty stopped the second Holland shooter to give Frewsburg the advantage. Reagan Chitester tallied for the Bears as did the next Lady Dutchmen shooter before Rachael Kerhli made it 4-2 in favor of the visitors. Holland’s final shooter missed wide to the left of the goal setting off a Frewsburg celebration.

“They really didn’t have any weaknesses,” Frewsburg head coach Scott Stone said of the Lady Dutchmen. “It was back and forth like a heavyweight fight.”

Holland took the lead in the 21st minute of regulation when Olivia Colkitt scored her second goal of the season from Ava Linder.

Just two minutes into the second half, the Bears answered as sophomore Raena Bird scored her second of the season from Alex Hultberg.

“It’s tough to plan for who you are going to guard on our team. We have multiple players who can score,” Stone said. “Raena is an extremely valuable player to our team. Obviously she stepped up and scored when we really needed it today.”

Following the 80 minutes of regulation, the teams played through two 10-minute overtime sessions and another two five-minute periods.

“We rely on our defense. We gained control of the game late in the first half,” Stone said. “We were confident at halftime, then we got the pressure going and put on in.”

Voty made four saves for Frewsburg while Amber Hornquist made six saves for Holland.

The Bears will now take on Maple Grove for the third time this season. In the previous two matchups, the teams tied 0-0 and the Bears won 2-1.

“We’re super excited. It’s definitely a rivalry. There is no other way we’d want it,” Stone said. “It’s the playoffs. Records don’t matter. It’s whoever wants it more and whoever shows up.”
