JCC Men Capture Postseason Berth
BUFFALO — Step one?
Behind goals from Harry Ward, Luuk Willemsen and Jesse DaCosta, the Jamestown Community College men’s soccer team secured a postseason berth by virtue of a 3-1 victory over Erie CC in an NJCAA Region 3 Division III game Wednesday.
“It felt good that we were able to secure it on the first opportunity we had to do that,” Jayhawks coach Pat Anderson said. “The kids are very excited, because it’s step one. Now we’re going to see how high we can get our seeding to be and keep moving along. We managed to hit step one, which is a good thing.”
The victory raised Jamestown CC’s record to 9-4-1 overall and 7-4-1 in Region 3 Division III. It also earned the Jayhawks their first playoff spot in four years.
Harry Ward scored the only goal of the first half to stake Jamestown CC to a 1-0 lead. The tally was assisted by Michael Broughton 27 minutes in. After intermission, Willemsen made it 2-0 on a crossing pass from Ward and, a minute later, Jesse DaCosta scored on a crossing pass from Willemsen.
Jakob Moore was the winning keeper, stopping eight shots. The Kats’ only goal came in the game’s final minute.
The Jayhawks return to action Saturday when they travel to SUNY Broome for a 3 p.m. Region 3 Division III contest.
BUFFALO — The Jamestown Community College women’s soccer team was locked in a scoreless tie at intermission, but Erie CC scored five times in the second half en route to a 5-0 NJCAA Region 3 Division III victory.
The loss dropped the Jayhawks to 1-12 on the season.
Kayleigh Coolidge was in net for the Jayhawks, who travel to SUNY Broome for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
