Jamestown Falls To Bennett In Double OT

BUFFALO — Djae Perry scored a touchdown and the deciding two-point conversion in the second overtime to lead Bennett to a 28-26 victory over Jamestown in a Class AA football game at All-High Stadium on Friday night.

The Red Raiders responded with a touchdown, courtesy of Savon VanSickle’s 3-yard run, on their ensuing possession, but Demarri Jones was stopped short of the goal line on the two-point conversion run.

The loss dropped the Red Raiders to a 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the division. The Tigers improve to 2-1 and 1-1.

“It was a great game. Both teams played their hearts out,” Jamestown coach Tom Langworthy said. “I was really proud of our guys. Bennett is a really good football team and we left it on the field. Games like this are razor thin between winning losing, and there’s so much we can learn from this. It’s early in the season. There are a lot of ways we can grow from this.”

Bennett led, 14-6, after the first quarter and 14-12 at halftime. The Red Raiders’ first-half scores came on pair of 1-yard TD runs by VanSickle, who finished with 98 yards on 29 carries.

Jamestown took the lead in the third quarter when quarterback Trey Drake found Elijah Rojas on a 9-yard scoring strike. When Jaylen Butera was successful on the two-point conversion run, the Red Raiders were in front, 20-14.

On its ensuing possession, however, Bennett tied the game, courtesy of Perry’s 35-yard TD run. The score remained that way through the first extra period, although Jamestown had a chance to win the game but fumbled on the Tigers’ 1-yard line. In the second OT, Perry (24 carries, 184 yards, two TDs) and VanSickle both found the end zone, but Jamestown was unable to convert its two-point try, giving Bennett the victory.

Drake finished 11 of 18 passing for 167 yards; Rojas caught five passes for 92 yards, while Butera and Jones had three receptions for 42 and 38 yards respectively. Defensively, the Red Raiders were led by Cam’ron Mayes with seven tackles, and Drayce Garland, Josh Tonkin and Jones with six apiece.

Jamestown returns to action next Friday at Clarence, which knocked off Lancaster last night.

“It still proves we’re right up there with the best of the best,” Langworthy said. “Bennett is one of the teams to beat in AA and we’re right there with them. … It’s a measuring stick and we learned a lot about ourselves in a good way. We lost but I’m encouraged.”
