Federko, Bengals Go 1-2 At NYU Tourney; Football Begins This Weekend

Buffalo State College went 1-2 at its season-opening women’s volleyball tournament this past weekend at New York University.

Host NYU swept the Bengals 25-19, 25-13, 25-11 on Friday and Wheaton swept Buffalo State 25-18, 25-10, 25-18 on Saturday morning before the Bengals rebounded for their first victory 16-25, 25-12, 22-25, 25-16, 5-4 over Pratt Institute on Saturday afternoon.

Jamestown High School graduate Brooke Federko is a junior setter for the Bengals. Over the weekend, she totaled two kills on 11 spikes; 65 assists and 30 digs.

The biology major had 17 assists and 10 digs against NYU, a kill, 18 assists and nine digs against Wheaton, and a kill, 30 assists and 11 digs against Pratt Institute.

The Bengals return to action against Nazareth, St. John Fisher and Utica at the University of Rochester Tournament this coming Friday and Saturday.

Mercyhurst University will kick off its 2019 football season Thursday night against Lake Erie College at Saxon Stadium in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Freshman kicker Jayden Schultz (Jamestown/Jamestown), freshman offensive lineman Andrew Bernard (Lakewood/Randolph), redshirt sophomore Cordell O’Brien (Frewsburg/Frewsburg) and freshman punter Carson Crist (Bemus Point/Maple Grove) are all listed on the Lakers’ roster to open the season.

The SUNY Fredonia women’s tennis team opened the season Friday with a 9-0 victory over D’Youville.

Mikayla Johnson (Lakewood/Southwestern) is listed as a sophomore on the Blue Devils’ roster, but did not factor in Friday’s action.

SUNY Fredonia’s Monday match at Geneseo was postponed by rain so the Blue Devils will return to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday at home against Penn State Behrend.

Alyson Edwards (Jamestown/Jamestown) is listed as a sophomore on the Lions’ roster.

Penn State Behrend’s men’s soccer team opened its season this past weekend with a pair of victories.

On Saturday, the Lions topped Alfred University 6-3 at the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament. On Sunday, they beat Baldwin Wallace 3-2.

Forward Chase Stevenson (Lakewood/Southwestern) is listed as a freshman biology major and defenseman Michael Cammarata (Lakewood/Southwestern) is listed as a freshman industrial engineering major on Penn State Behrend’s roster, but neither factored in the scoring this weekend.

Penn State Behrend’s women’s soccer team opened its season with a pair of losses this past weekend in the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament.

On Friday, the Lions dropped a 3-0 decision to Nazareth and on Saturday they lost 2-0 to Kenyon.

Chloe Kibbe (Jamestown/Maple Grove) is a freshman on Penn State Behrend’s team with an undecided major.

Gannon University will open its women’s soccer season Thursday at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio.

Alexa Dix (Jamestown/Jamestown) is a senior midfielder/forward for the Knights.

Dix was named to the NJCAA Region 3 Second Team and the Western New York Athletic Conference First Team at Jamestown Community College in 2017 as the Jayhawks fell in the regional final.

The Gannon men will open their season that same day against Notre Dame College, but the game will be home at McConnell Family Stadium in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Alex Lee Yaw (Mercyhurst Prep/Jamestown) is a junior sports management and marketing major for the Knights.

In 2017, Lee Yaw played in 18 games with eight starts, notching four goals and four assists. Last season, he managed six goals and an assist in nine games, seven of which were starts.

Alfred University will open its 2019 football season at 1 p.m. Saturday at Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania.

The Saxons will feature seven local players on their roster this year.

Ben Burk (Lakewood/Southwestern) is a senior quarterback, Caleb Rinko (Great Valley/Ellicottville) is a senior running back, Dustin McCaslin (Ashville/Chautauqua Lake) is a sophomore kicker, Wes Senn (Randolph/Randolph) is a senior offensive lineman, Carter Russo (Bemus Point/Maple Grove) is a sophomore defensive lineman, Austin Pierce (Forestville/Forestville) is a junior defensive lineman and Luke Szumigala (Forestville/Forestville) is a first-year tight end.

Alfred State will open its 2019 football season at noon Saturday at UMass-Dartmouth.

Sam VanVolkenberg (Sherman/Sherman) is a senior offensive lineman and Derek Ecklund (Panama/Panama) is a freshman running back for the Pioneers.

Edinboro University will open its 2019 football season at 7 p.m. Saturday at Grand Valley State University.

Trent Gray (Frewsburg/Frewsburg) is listed as a redshirt freshman quarterback/long snapper, Connor Crabtree (Gerry/Cassadaga Valley) is a freshman wide receiver and Gilberto Ortiz II (Dunkirk/Erie Community College) is a junior defensive end for the Fighting Scots.

The Washington & Jefferson football team will open its season at 1 p.m. Saturday against No. 18 Wittenberg at home in Cameron Stadium.

Easton Tanner (Jamestown/Maple Grove) is a freshman wide receiver for the Presidents.
