Maple Grove Bats Go Silent In Loss To Warsaw

Section V champion Warsaw entered Friday’s Class C Far West Regional contest at the Martin Road Complex with a perfect record, and senior pitcher Anna O’Geen made sure that it stayed that way.

Facing a lineup of heavy Maple Grove bats, O’Geen threw a one-hitter with five strikeouts and received some great defensive play in support to lead the Tigers (20-0) to a 2-0 win.

The Red Dragons (18-2) reached base on four walks, but Warsaw was able to get out of two of those jams with double plays — including a highlight-reel catch and throw from shortstop Savannah Till in the fifth.

Lauren Grissom started that inning with a walk, bringing Erin Mansfield up to bat. She ripped an infield stinger toward third base, with Till diving to her right for the catch before hurling to first base for the second out.

“Savannah does a great job covering the field at shortstop,” Warsaw coach Amber Stackhouse said. “Defensively … we have been a sound defensive team. Katie Kersh at first base does a great job scooping balls and turning it in to double plays.”

Sammy Davis started off the fourth with a base on balls as well, but once again the Tigers turned two to get rid of a runner in scoring position.

When Maple Grove did not have the benefit of walks, they had a difficult time trying to solve O’Geen with the exception of a single to right field by Sammy Davis in the sixth.

“Their pitcher hands down won the game,” Maple Grove head coach Rebecca Allen said. “No pitcher that we have faced this season has been able to shut down our bigs like she did tonight. She did a great job of jamming our strong deep-ball hitters and then mixing up heights and speeds enough for the rest of our lineup to have a little trouble.”

The Tigers got on the board with an unearned run in the third as Till started things out with a single over second base. She headed to second on a stolen base, and made the push to third when the Red Dragons suffered a missed pickoff throw, allowing Till to head home.

Kersch struck a single after that opening run, but Lynne Nordin was able to get out of trouble on her way to a strikeout and two walks for the game.

The Tigers would string together two hits in the sixth, but Mansfield was able to turn a double play to get the Red Dragons out of trouble there.

Warsaw got its small ball working in the seventh as Sammie Kilner started out with a walk and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Riley Marshall. Till plated the insurance run with a single to center field.

“We have quite a bit of leadership,” Stackhouse said. “I have girls who have been on the varsity squad since seventh grade. Anna O’Geen is leading us on the mound. There is a lot of talent on this team. There are a lot of travel ball players on this team. We are a solid ball club from one to nine and our bench is just as solid when they get put in the game.”

Warsaw will now take on Section IX champion Pine Plains in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association semifinals at 1:30 p.m. Saturday on Field C at the Moreau Recreational Park in South Glens Falls.

The 1:30 p.m. semifinal on Field D will feature Section IV champion Edison against the winner of tomorrow’s quarterfinal between Section X St. Lawrence and Section II Chatham. The championship game will be played on Field A at 5:30 p.m.
