The Chautauqua Lake high school rowing team is hosting a free, one-day, learn-to-row session for student-athletes on Saturday, June 8, starting with registration at 8:30 a.m.

Eligible athletes are those students in grades 7-11 during the current 2018-19 school year.

The training sessions begins at 9 a.m. with so-called dry-land training. This includes safety and rowing terms, technique training on rowing machines, and practice rowing in rowing machines on the dock. At approximately 10:30 a.m., participants will head out on the water in Chautauqua Lake’s rowing shells, accompanied by coaches in safety launches. There will be a break for lunch — included as part of the event — followed by additional water time in the rowing shells. Training concludes about 3:30 p.m.

Preregistration is recommended to hold a spot and help the team plan the necessary coaches and helpers. The online registration can be found at www.rowchautauqua.org. Participants should bring clothing appropriate for the anticipated weather for the day. Loose basketball-style shorts should be avoided; since seats in the rowing shells move, loose clothing can get caught in the wheels.

The registration process includes a waiver form that should be completed by the athlete and parent/guardian and turned in at registration.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about a new sport during this free session. It may help an athlete determine if he or she wishes to pursue becoming a part of the spring 2020 high school team. If there are any questions, contact Coach Jim Odrzywolski at jimo@rowchautauqua.org.
