ORCHARD PARK — Frewsburg’s Jameson Sposato reached a new high-water mark of his career at the opening round of the Section VI Tennis Championships on Tuesday at Orchard Park High School.

The junior was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Brian Bork of West Seneca in prequarterfinal action before falling to Jerry Xiao of Williamsville South, 6-0, 6-1 in the second round.

After claiming his first-ever Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association singles title with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Neil Gens of Fredonia last week, Sposato was able to make the best sectional push of his career.

In 2018 as a sophomore, Sposato lost in the opening round of play to Nate Canazzi of Grand Island, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (3). His 2019 run is the best result for a CCAA champion since Cooper Miller of Falconer took third overall in 2016.

“It was a great win, he played a very good player,” said Frewsburg coach and Jameson’s father Jamie Sposato. “I think it was a nice hurdle to get over, getting the top seed at the county tournament which gave him a nice bracket seeding. Getting that first win at the sectional tournament is another stepping stone. We’re loving it right now. We’re really excited.”

Tuesday’s achievement did not come without adversity. Sposato stumbled out of the gate against Bork, going down three games to none early on.

“I was a little rusty and a little nervous,” Jameson said. “I just had to settle in and play my game. I just wanted to go in and not regret anything. He started off 3-0 and then I came back and won my serve and went on to break him.”

After righting the ship in the opening set, Sposato still had his work cut out for him. More give-and-take in the second set came to a stalemate at 5-5, with Sposato getting a crucial break to earn a chance to finish off the match with a hold of serve.

“He could hit the ball very hard and could place it well. He had a great serve and just a good overall game,” Jameson said. “I was really satisfied with getting that first win. I was pretty drained from it.”

Moving on to face Xiao, Sposato got a glimpse of the difficult competition that comes with a Section VI quarterfinal.

“I just realized the type of play up here. I’m just trying to get better in the offseason and come back with what I’ve learned.”

Fredonia’s five players left standing after last week saw their seasons come to an end.

In singles competition, senior Neil Gens won his first-round matchup with East Aurora’s Anthony Markello, 6-4, 6-1. Gens then lost in the quarterfinals to No. 1 Greg Hastings of North Tonawanda. Tuesday was the third visit to sectionals for Gens, and wraps up what Fredonia coach Lisa Johnston called “an outstanding tennis career at Fredonia.”

In doubles competition, seniors Max Kinkela and Caleb Reynolds defeated Newfane’s Danny Dy and James Leibring, 6-3, 6-0, in their first match. In their second match, the duo faced No. 1 Noah Sayoc and Declan Watson of Orchard Park, who have been to states twice. Fredonia’s pair was swept. Fredonia’s Dan Gifford and Jimmy Rush were swept in their first match by Nate Reilly and Grant Asklar of Niagara Falls.
